Plans are complete for Lea County fair preparations. The National Guard has moved out and booths are ready. Expanded sheep hogs poultry and rabbit facilities, new divisions, and increased entries are planned. Entries deadline is 1200 noon Wednesday Sept 5 with ownership rules for junior livestock.
An unknown bandit abducted assistant manager Farr's family, forced entry at gunpoint, and looted a Roswell supermarket safe. Early audits listed about 15153 dollars missing with 14000 in one dollar bills plus silver, all taken in two sacks. Police posted roadblocks but had no leads as the car abandoned nearby was found shortly after.
State trooper A. J. Mahoney and Deputy Sheriff John O. Pennell set a roadblock west of Tatum early Saturday in a bid to catch the burglar who looted Farr's Supermarket in Roswell for 18,250 dollars. The 11:43 p.m. Friday robbery used a blue and white Ford with a broken tail light. the suspect is a white male 35 to 40, about six feet tall and 150 to 160 pounds. The cash totaled 18,250 in mixed denominations and was packed in seven dark green canvass bags inside two white bags stamped Federal Reserve Dallas. The roadblock was withdrawn at 3:00 a.m. Saturday with no arrest.
Area residents report brown spot on lawns described as Summer Blight. The issue affects multiple properties with lawns showing patchy dead areas and discoloration during warm months. Local gardeners seek guidance from extension services and neighbors on prevention and treatment strategies.
Only one entry received so far for the Lea County Fair Queen Contest. Co chairs Paul Newsom and Brookie Anderson say entry blanks are at Lovington Chamber of Commerce. The contest is September 5 at 8 30 p.m. in Jake McClure Arena.
James Darrel Kuykendall, 28, of Odessa, was brought back to face a rape charge in county jail. He pleaded not guilty and is held on $1000 bond awaiting a Justice of the Peace hearing this week.
Lovington Local Farm Bureau announces no regular meeting this month but invites all members to a labor meeting Monday August 20 at 7 30 p m in the county meeting room basement Lovington Courthouse chaired by Mrs P G Murph urging turnout for the event.
Mrs Sherri Finkbine underwent a legal abortion after doctors found the fetus would have been deformed due to thalidomide. The 13 week pregnancy ended at Caroline Hospital in Stockholm with the operation described as a complete success.

A 16 foot fishing boat carrying 19 people including 18 children from Blessed Hope Missionary Baptist Church sank off Quincy Florida after loading too heavily. Only 11 year old Jerome Maples survived. one adult, Joseph Bouie, was aboard.
Two San Antonio men were arrested and taken to the Texas DPS offices in Lubbock for lie detector tests in the Carlsbad murder case of 1961. Sheriff Hawkins said one suspect had been named by a material witness in Carlsbad. Both men, 24 and 26, had admitted involvement in a hot check operation. Patty Sue Pritz and Mattie Restine were found shot near Carlsbad after their Aug 1961 disappearance. one girl had been raped.
A roping event at the Jake Mc Clure ranch features a three-calf average with about 100 calves slated to be roped beginning at 2:00 p.m. The public is invited to watch the competition.
Two vehicle wrecks in Lovington disrupted Saturday morning police activity. Maurice Olan Mitchell 15 suffered a broken left leg when his motor scooter hit Grace Hicks Thornton 36 in front of Tipps Men Shop. A second collision between Harold Von Tanner 1960 Renault Dauphone and Carrol Don Tanner 1959 Hillburn station wagon injured Merry Tanner with minor injuries.
The Methodist Youth Activities Week begins Monday at 6 30 p m with Reverend Milton Chester as guest speaker. Chester, pastor of Western Hills Methodist Church El Paso, will become director of the Wesley Foundation and Bible Choir instructor at Eastern New Mexico University in September. The program centers on following In His Steps and runs through Friday with worship and a Galilean Service at the Country Club Lakes. Members 15 to 24 from all churches are invited to attend and participate in daytime evangelistic visits.
