The Leader conducted a telephone poll of 100 random adults showing a strong anti sales tax stance. Nearly half were housewives at home. two-thirds of contacts favored opposing the tax while a minority supported its imposition. Lovington residents with rooms suitable for NMJC students are asked to register them with the Lovington Chamber of Commerce. Harold Baer, chamber manager, said rooms will be listed with NMJC. A fender bender at 11 58 a m involved a 1964 Oldsmobile owned by Mrs Jerry Wright and a 1963 Mercury driven by Mark Howard near the intersection of 1st Street and Jefferson Avenue A door opening and close passing scraped a chrome strip causing $10 damage to the Oldsmobile no damage to the Mercury Capt Cunningham of the Lovington City Police investigated and no citations issued
The Justice of the Peace Association met in Tucumcari to draft a stand on the constitutional amendment that would abolish the JP system in New Mexico. Resolution committee to receive the proposal. leaders John L. Martin and Eldon Whitten weighed in as debate continued.
Partly cloudy today tonight and Friday with a chance of afternoon or night thunder shower. Highs near 90 degrees, yesterday's top reached 94 in Hobbs with a 67 degree overnight low. State records show 6.0 inches of precipitation so far this season.
Local sheriff's deputies investigated the theft of five 55 gallon oil drums from a dock behind a power station 17 miles northwest of Lovington. Amerada Petroleum Company's W C Henderson reported the loss valued at about 195 dollars. Investigation is pending.
A change in Abbott and Oliver, a Levington retail firm, is announced. Bill Sanders will buy Herb Oliver’s stock and, with Jimmy Abbott, become owners of the corporation. Oliver is in Albuquerque this week evaluating a possible deal but has not announced future plans. Sanders has been with the firm just over a year after moving from Albuquerque. The firm moved last fall to a remodeled location on the west side of the square. No name change is planned.
A new group called The Progressive Citizens of Lovington Association plans to organize to seek additional revenue for the town. Eddie Mac Robinson announces the group and invites interested residents to a 7:00 meeting at the First Federal Community Room to discuss solutions including a one cent sales tax.
Local 4 H members figure among winners in the National Awards Program record book contest. Details highlight top youths and their projects as the national competition results are released.
Richard Speck, 24, faces a court hearing in Chicago as prosecutors seek the death penalty for eight counts of murder. Public defender Gerald Getty plans a motion to appoint psychiatrists to decide if Speck can stand trial, with a heavy guard present due to high-profile safety fears.
Decker is in county jail after a gun battle with city and county officers. He fled home following a disturbance call and threatened Lt. J E Polson. A roadblock near town edge led to his capture. Bond set at 5000 dollars for each offense.
The Leader will run reader questions answered by Lovington Mayor A. L. Hahn through September 13 about the sales tax and related issues. One reader asks what happens if the tax is defeated. the mayor notes no decision yet and that expenses must be cut or revenue raised to stay within income.
Noah Elmer Gregory aged 49 of Banke faced arrest on charges of disorderly conduct after a drunken driving incident. He is currently serving time for a 170 dollar fine and costs. A bond set at 32.50 dollars was noted for the additional charges.
