A tank explosion at a service station in Kansas City injures 44 firemen, several critically, as flaming gasoline erupts from four 1,800 gallon tanks. Firemen, spectators, and police rush to aid the injured. priests administer last rites to five victims while no fatalities are confirmed.
The 13 hour blackout hit upper Manhattan during a brutal heat wave leaving half a million residents without power. Con Edison shut off all but the remaining 13 cables to avoid a longer blackout. Hospitals used auxiliary power and stores sold out of candles as police flooded the West Side to deter looting.
Seaborn Collins, New Mexico state Democratic chairman, has paid delinquent taxes and interest owed by three firms in which he held interest. A revenue bureau official said the total was considerably more than the previously cited $11,000.
Funeral services for Esta Elien Edwards 89 will be held at 2 p m Thursday in the Smith Yarbro Funeral Chapel. She died Monday and is survived by three sons five daughters and numerous grandchildren great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Her husband J B Edwards preceded her in death in 1943. They lived west of Tatum.

Life and Industrial Companies of New Mexico Inc announced plans to establish a Lovington headquarters to oversee plans for 40 industries across the state. The firm aims to open an executive office within a month, launch a steel mill in Clovis, a liquid fertilizer plant in Tatum, and inaugurate a large life insurance operation before year’s end.

Doctors said Swedish opera singer Jussi Björling will be fit again after rest. Björling, 48, was reported at his summer residence on Signe Island in the Stockholm Archipelago after suffering a minor heart attack Tuesday.
Residents were told the bad taste in Farmington water would disappear in a day or two. The county health department explained the taste arose from recent rains washing stagnant water from standing pools in the Animas River into the city's supply.
