Roswell burglary case linked to five county break-ins

A Roswell youth once jailed for Portales burglary is implicated in five southeastern New Mexico break-ins. Sheriff Leon Harris ties Jerry Browne to incidents in Portales and nearby towns with two Roswell airmen admitting to similar thefts. A rifle and merchandise were recovered, Browne previously claimed mental illness.

Nations Industry Perked Up In July

UPI reports the nations industrial production rose for the third straight month reaching 6 percent above the April recession low. The Fed index to 133 shows gains across foods, housing starts, steel, textiles, apparel, rubber and leather. Inflation concerns persist as production remains 8 percent below a year earlier.

Lovington Community College Opens September 11

Lovington Community College will start September 11 with faculty drawn from Eastern New Mexico University and Lovington Public Schools. Classes mainly in late afternoon and evening will use Lovington High School facilities. Courses include biology engineering business economics chemistry education English geology history home economics industrial arts languages mathematics political science psychology and speech. Thousands Watch Ceremonial Opening Parade At Gallup

Thousands line the business district in Gallup for the ceremonial opening of the 37th Intertribal Ceremonial. Tribes in feathered war bonnets, silver turquoise jewelry, beaded costumes, and beaded buckskins perform as bands play tribal music. Civic leaders ride ceremonial autos beside horse drawn wagons while spectators enjoy the opening dances narrated by Merle Tucker.

Two Dresses Stolen From Beverly's Dress Shop

Beverly's Dress Shop reports two dresses size 14 2 stolen Thursday afternoon by two unidentified white women in their 30s. The suspects, seen carrying a brown paper bag, browsed for about 30 minutes before fleeing. shopkeeper Mrs. Beverly Wisdom suspects they intended to resell the garments.

Lovington Football Team Holds Special Meeting And Practice Times

A special meeting for all Lovington football players is called by Coach Wilson Knapp for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Field House. First practice is set for Monday at 7 30 a.m. Field readiness is required at the stated hour. Afternoon practices are scheduled the same day at 4 p.m.

Lovington announces H C Pannell term staff with Carl Carlton directing the new community college and serving as director of special services. Helping Teacher New Addition To Faculty

The Lovington schools appoint Mrs. Ethel Lampman as Helping Teacher to assist all new teachers. She brings 15 years in Ohio schools and teaching in Llano Elementary. Lampman holds an M A from Kent University and studied mental testing at Ohio State University this summer.

Artesia fell to Carlsbad 4 3 on Friday as Carlsbad capitalized on Artesia errors. Red Hickman pitched well for Carlsbad while Williams took the loss for Artesia. Midland beat Plainview 4 2 to push toward the Sophomore League title. San Angelo defeated Hobbs 8 3 with 17 hits off Rodriguez. Hobbs faces San Angelo again Saturday and Sunday.

Theft Strikes Chatham YMCA Outdoor Pool Area

Chicago officials report a theft at the Chatham YMCA on the South Side. Six curved redwood benches and a large patio table were stolen from the new outdoor swimming pool area. Police are investigating and seeking clues.

Elvis Bids Mom Goodbye

Elvis Presley sobbed and bowed his head at his mother Gladys Presley’s burial in Memphis. Fans filled the National Funeral Home chapel and lined the graveside route as Presley, near collapse, received support from four men. Mrs Presley died Thursday at Methodist Hospital of a heart attack.

Zane Ford Named Principal of Central Elementary

Zane Ford, a Lovington schools veteran with Arkansas teaching experience, was selected as principal of Central Elementary. The Old Central building will host additional elementary sections this year until the new Lea County facility is ready. The plan adds multiple grade sections and special programs, with Llano Elementary housing temporarily in the same building.

Nantucket Plane Crash Kills 21 Holiday Travelers

A Northeast Airlines Convair from New York to Nantucket crashed in fog near Nantucket Airport killing 21 of 384 aboard. Among the dead is former Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Gordon Dean. Pilot Capt John Burnham and co-pilot David Carey died. stewardess Eileen Dabek also perished. The crash prompted emergency response and investigations by the Civil Aeronautics Board.
