Town reports a single policeman on duty as the community closes a meeting. The year 1954 is expected to see more oil and gas exploration, with over 50,000 wells and more than 200 million feet of hole drilled in the United States.
World Oil projects the completion of 50 264 wells and 205 862 900 feet of hole in 1954, up from 49 564 wells the prior forecast. Through June, 25 130 wells were completed, with 25 134 needed in the rest of the year to meet the forecast as crude runs are cut and prices soften. In Washington, Eisenhower and GOP leaders back a compromise to outlaw the Communist Party as a political organization, not individuals, stripping it of rights to run in elections and sue.
Lovington Junior High's Cadet Band has 65 new uniforms from Ostwald Band Uniform Company. Fittings led by F John Pulman Jr take place Monday through Wednesday for all cadet members. The jackets feature a West Point style high collar with five wear options, blue trousers with a white stripe, and marine blue shakos. Special white drum major and twirler uniforms were also bought.
The Shelton Agency moves to a new Hobbs Highway location in a remodelled building once used by Sea Office Supply. Republican and Democratic leaders in New Mexico plan to frame the November campaign around the long past records issue, opposing party lines and touting Gov. Mechem’s administration.
Mrs Rose Anne Hillesheim 35 died at Hobbs Hospital Friday night after a lingering illness. Born in Collerine County Derry Ireland she lived in Roswell and El Paso before moving to Hobbs three years ago. Funeral services were held at St Christopher's Episcopal Church with burial at Memory Gardens. Survivors include a daughter in Ireland and two siblings.
Marcella Thorn, a sheriff's department operator, is recovering from a gunshot wound to her left hand sustained Saturday while cleaning her 25 automatic pistol. She was treated at Dr. Gillett's office and is expected to return to duty in the next few days.
Oscar Banks, former Bluefield Daily Telegraph reporter, joins the Hobbs Flare and Lovington Leader news staff. He will cover Eunice Jal Lovington and surrounding areas, bringing over a year in journalism after graduating from Mississippi Southern College in 1952. He has been in Hobbs for two weeks, relocating from Bluefield West Virginia.
Local Business and Professional Women Club members have completed picnic plans honoring Mrs. Hazel Durham president of the State Federation. Mrs. Durham arrives August 18. The event will be at Mrs. Floy Tatum’s home 524 West Washington with invitations extended to Lea County clubs Eunice Jal and two in Hobbs.
In Tulsa Oklahoma President J L Burke of Service Pipeline Co announced a plan to form Western Pipe Line Co to build a 630 mile crude line from Fort Laramie Wyoming to near Kansas City Missouri Western will be a subsidiary of Service Pipeline with initial capacity of 160 000 barrels daily The project aims to open bottlenecked oil and may be in service by end of 1954 with later expansions to 200 000 barrels daily and pumps added to handle increased output
Reece Ramsey a 67 year old self styled preacher in a snake handling sect died after a rattlesnake bite in Trenton Georgia. Ramsey refused his wife’s plea to call an ambulance and sought prayers from Rev A M Wallraven before slumping to the ground as the hymn Im Getting Ready To Leave This World was sung. He died on arrival at Dekalb County Hospital in Ft Payne Alabama.
A public drawing for the special antelope hunts will be held shortly. Hunting dates for each area will be announced promptly, and successful applicants will be notified at the same time. The first hunt begins September 18.
Washington The senate completed action on a bill to authorize the agriculture department to make emergency loans to farmers and stockmen. The measure allows up to 15 million dollars and extends until June 30 1955. sent to the White House for approval.
A string of blasts rocked the Kanawha County jail basement in Charleston W V deputies rushed to the scene. Eight quarts of home brew stored as evidence exploded forcing emergency response and investigation.
Washington The Navy will honorably discharge 45000 inactive reserve officers who have not trained for three years or more. This adds to 45000 others separated since last fall as the weedout continues to reduce reserve strength to officers available for active service in war or national emergency, says Assistant Navy Secretary James Smith Jr.
Mrs. C. E. Kindel visits London Kentucky to see her youth scenes and will attend the Annual Oldtimer's Celebration. She reports enjoying the trip and time with relatives during the event in town.
Jimmy Louis of Lovington, 25, a crop duster pilot, was injured when his plane hit two highline wires and flipped to the ground east of Lovington Texas near the Lovington Plains Highway. He suffered a fractured back and facial and body injuries and was taken to Lea General Hospital. The aircraft, owned by J Andy Anderson of Lovington, was a total loss. The crash disrupted electric service over a wide area served by Lea County Electric Cooperative Inc.
Mrs Adelle McDermitt died in Eunice on Sunday at age 48. Green Chapel is in charge of arrangements and the body will be taken to Sagina Michigan for burial. Survivors include her husband Don McDermitt Sr a son Don McDermitt Jr and a daughter Mrs Bernice Phillips of Sagina Michigan.
Hobbs city police disclosed a Safeway store burglary at 208 East Dunham Friday night. About 150 dollars in cash and mixed meats and groceries were taken. Entry seemed pre closing, with a torn ventilator cover as the exit. Police reported the cash box was forcibly opened and merchandise found scattered on the meat counter.
Mrs. M. A. Darden of Girard Texas mother of C. V. Darden spends the week here helping with a school ward robe. She will enter Hardin-Simmons University at Abilene on September 12.
The Senate backed extending Social Security to about 7 million more people and increasing benefits for roughly 6.5 million current and future beneficiaries. Payroll deductions will rise from January 1 for earners above 3600 yearly to fund the expanded coverage. The bill moves to a House Senate conference committee to reconcile differences.
Lovington town officials fired Patrolman Leland Hart and the town trustee A C Holder says no new officers will be hired while the sheriff’s department provides protection. Chief Joe Price resigned amid a rapid shake up as Jim White, the newest officer, remains the lone on duty at about 3 30 PM with the board delaying a new chief selection.
Amerada Petroleum Corp stakes a new wildcat in Lea County New Mexico location 112 miles north of Sunray and Sea board No 1state. The site lies 1980 feet from south and east lines of section 9, 12s 32e with projected depth 3300 feet to test the Queen Sand 25 miles west and slightly north of Tatum.
