The Lovington celebration drew thousands as the fair and rodeo opened with Chamber of Commerce coordination led by Jimmy Abbott and John Shearman. Rain briefly disrupted events but did not ruin attendance. Rep. Dawson Mathes and family from Georgia planned to attend along with returning Papases and Laytons in the parade.
Mogollon in southwestern New Mexico was once a silver boom town with about 20 million dollars mined from mines such as Peacock Silver Queen Confidence Little Fanny and Last Chance. By 1909 about 2000 residents inhabited Silver Creek Canyon but by 1926 most mines closed and today only ruins and equipment remain while visitors can explore the old town along the main street. Access is via US highways about 75 miles northwest of Silver City and 170 miles southwest of Socorro.
Weather forecast for the Eastern Plains calls for generally fair mornings and widely scattered afternoon and early night thundershowers mainly north through Friday. Temperatures near Clovis 66 to 69, Tucumcari 64 to 97, Artesia 66 to 96, Lovington 68 to 96 with little overall change.

The New Mexico West Texas Singing Convention will hold a singing in the clouds in Cloudcroft New Mexico this weekend. Singing starts Saturday afternoon August 18 and continues through Sunday August 19. Attendees are asked to bring hymnbooks.
Lea County Fair drew winners across many divisions in Department D China. Notables include Charlene Hughes of Hobbs earning multiple top places in Framed Scene and Tea Set events, Margie Barnard Lovington taking several 1st places in Platter and Decanter categories, Ruth Tilghman Hobbs winning Framed Plate and Portrait titles, and Ruth Tilghman paired with Lucille Lee in Fruit Plate and Framed Grapes events.
President Nixon declared his innocence in the Watergate affair during a half hour Oval Office address. He urged Senate investigators to end hearings and let the courts determine guilt, while appealing for action on inflation and other urgent problems. He said the probe had become focused on implicating him personally despite not addressing specific charges.
Lea County Rodeo opened to a damp arena but enthusiastic crowds. First go rounds in four events saw top scores by John Myers in bareback bronc, Larry Aldoff in saddle bronc, and Keith Johnston along with Curtis Moore tying for first in bull riding. Dogging and barrel racing featured fast times and close finishes as calf and steer roping wrap up tonight.
The 1973-74 4-H and FFA Horse Show judged Wednesday afternoon by Judge Ray McClung County Extension Agent Cochran County Texas. results list top placers and prizes for lots including foaled years 1973 1972 and 1970 or before with individual exhibitors and prize money.
Curry County Grand Jury backs the Clovis City Commission action firing Police Chief Ken Kingsbury after he refused to submit his resignation. The panel said its term ending report supported the dismissal as the investigation continued, with the mayor citing personal reasons rather than union activity.
