Sherrie Cooper of Hobbs was named New Mexico Little Miss and Cathy Ann Robinson of Hobbs won La Petite in the 35 year old division Sunday at Pannell auditorium during coronation ceremonies in Lovington. Parents listed as Royce Cooper and C A Robinson Jr. Runners up included Doris Jean Ray of Lovington.
Royalty in miniature led the La Petite and Our Little Miss divisions in Lovington with Miss Cooper winning talent and Miss Ray as runner up. Contestants from Lovington Hobbs Carlsbad Jal and Las Cruces performed in batons dances and variations while guests and judges from Clovis Hobbs Lubbock and Dallas weighed in. The event promotes participation in the International World Little Miss Pageant to be held in Dallas August 19 to 21 with $1500 scholarships and travel rewards for internationals.
Lovington’s Doris Jean Ray captured two trophies after winning the Little Miss event. She heads to Dallas for an international competition this weekend, supported by her grandparents George Ford and wife of Andrews, Texas. Her entry includes the song Third Man Theme and a floral sportswear suit with a lavender gown for the formal.
Lovington's Board of Realtors endorsed a new one cent city sales tax saying it targets city improvements and is equitable as it funds needed revenue. President Eddie Mac Robinson stressed the tax would be earmarked for Lovington and urged urgency amid what he called an emergency.
The mayor argues that progress requires more revenue and a better city to retain and attract businesses. He contends closures aren’t due to any tax yet and emphasizes improving services and appeal to support growth.

Hobbs and Lea County officials dispute $70,000 held by the city from New Mexico Junior College land purchased for a site. The sale, under a covenant, requires net proceeds from leases or sales of released property to support Lea County airports, per a Federal Aviation Administration letter from August 4.
Law officials in Lovington report multiple arrests over the weekend including two juveniles charged with three counts of auto theft and breaking and entering. A hearing is set for next Monday for the juvenile pair.
A preliminary hearing is set for Thursday in the justice of the peace court for Ray Franklin Decker 29 of Lovington charged with two counts of attempt to commit a felony murder and two counts of aggravated assault. Decker was shot during a roadblock gun battle with Lea County sheriff and police after fleeing his home. Bond totals 12000 with 5000 on each felony attempt and 1000 on each aggravated assault.
Graciela Saravia from Salta Argentina will arrive in Florida August 23 or 24 and enroll as a senior at Lovington starting August 29. She will live with the Robert E. Smith family and brings tennis swimming and water skiing interest. Her father is an electrical engineer cattle rancher and her mother teaches home economics.
