Chicago AP film updated report says Democratic National Chairman Paul Butler criticized radio and press for vacant seats at the Convention Hall. He charged coverage and weekly papers kept seats unused, and urged fairness in ticket access as delegates sought entry.
Delegates at the Democratic Convention embraced a compromise civil rights plank, easing a North South split and signaling Adlai Stevenson’s likely first ballot nomination. The vote seen at 705 to secure Stevenson, with Harriman still contesting a core of 4 first ballot votes as backroom talks proceed.
O'Brien urges a fresh ruling on excluding coverage of Parole Board meetings and press relations. He blames publisher William Cooper for distorting relations and says the board acted to bar reporting, presenting a more accurate view of the situation.
New Mexico National Guardsmen face aggravated assault charges after a knife-swinging riot in El Paso Texas. Four NM youths hospitalized with stab wounds, condition reported out of danger. Riot followed a 4 4 feud between Albuquerque youths. Suspects include Hatley brothers and Ortega and Robles. four other guardsmen held up nearby and robbed of 16 dollars. Police detained Manuel Armijo of San Antonio.
Former Denver mayor Quigg Newton, now Ford Foundation vice president, tours the city with Mayor Will Nicholson. Newton says Denver is more beautiful than ever and compliments Nicholsons administration for doing a very good job.
In San Francisco on Wednesday Senator Everett M. Dirksen head of the subcommittee shaping the Republican civil rights plank dismissed Chicago produced Democratic language as serpentine weaseling. He said the GOP platform will not include such evasive phrasing and hinted support for endorsing the Supreme Court desegregation decision.
Republican National Chairman Leonard Hall countered Governor Clement at the Democratic Convention in Chicago calling his remarks half truths distortions and misstatements. Hall said Clement warned of a rough campaign but vowed to endure while criticizing Nixon claiming he hurts and squeals. Eisenhower White House offered no comment.

Former Illinois official Orville Hodge, a Republican auditor, is sentenced to 20 years for misapplying more than $800000 deposited in federally insured banks. He pleaded guilty on 51 counts and was brought to Chicago from Springfield. he still faces embezzlement charges for state funds.
A 16 year old girl from New York, Mary Frances Saddle, stranded in Lovington, was aided by State Patrolman A W Payne and Deputy Les Villers and the Red Cross. She headed to Chicago to stay with an aunt, claiming to travel from Tokyo via Los Angeles and Chicago. Her wallet and bus ticket were lost in Roswell, leaving her without funds or clothing. She was given shelter and a ticket to Chicago.
The State Parole Board grants Manuel Chavez parole after a 1952 embezzlement conviction for about 40000 dollars from Valencia County. He served part of a five to seven year sentence while serving as Valencia County treasurer and a top GOP candidate for state office.
Former Kansas senator Harry C. Darby, head of the 22 member delegation, predicted the Kansas group will vote solidly for Richard M. Nixon at the Republican National Convention in San Francisco next week. He said Nixon should have no trouble despite chatter about replacing Nixon as the vice presidential candidate and noted top party strategists are optimistic about handling Harold Stassen’s challenge.
The board conditionally accepted the new west Jefferson building at a special meeting this week. Superintendent Horace Pannell said it should be ready for occupancy by September 4 though some work remains outside and final acceptance will follow after pupils start.
Thieves smashed a window at Witherspoon Motors on St. Main last night and stole a 1955 Chevy Bel Aire from the lot. They rifled a office file cabinet but nothing else was recovered. City police and the sheriff's office investigate the break in.
Bishop Ambrose Pinger arrives in Hong Kong after five years in Communist prisons. He says 10 American detainees are treated better to push Geneva talks to a ministerial level, but reports no religious freedom in Shanghai and little optimism for church conditions.
Farmers in Lea County obtained loans totaling 567 170 through the Farmers Home Administration for the year ending June 30 1956. Repayments on loans outstanding reached 488 750. The agency funded operating inputs soil and water conservation and emergency needs while the local committee approved applications and determined eligibility and loan value.
A 22 year old Hobbs man identified as M A Chapman ignored traffic citations two months ago and a warrant followed for failure to answer. He was arrested August 8 and jailed to work off a $60 fine but escaped. He was recaptured in Roswell then returned to Hobbs facing escape and failure to appear charges and possible grand larceny over a missing typewriter.

A San Pedro California man Sam Fresquez, 32, received four nights lodging in Hobbs after a traffic stop for mufflers and speeding. He was cited and bonded at city hall with a $10 bond and searched for funds, ending with $10.45 in available cash. He spent the night in jail awaiting bond arrangements.
