A Lovington Lovington parade prep boosts with Chamber of Commerce optimism about a larger turnout for the Wednesday event. Rain supports business while residents hope for calmer weather and a vibrant Fair and Rodeo Week. In Artesia, voters face a Tuesday ballot on winding up the four year College of Artesia amid debt and potential closure.
Lovington hosts the Lea County Fair and Rodeo for four days with a Wednesday parade at 4 p.m. and an RCA sanctioned rodeo at 7:30 p.m. at Jake McClure Rodeo Arena. A new public fish fry by the Lions Club debuts after the parade with prices of $1.50 adults and $1.00 children.
Debbie Elliott, 17, a Lovington High sophomore, is the daughter of Olen and Mrs. Elliott of 722 West Harrison. She weighs 120 pounds, is 54 inches tall, with brown hair and blue eyes, and is a member of Lea 4-H Rough Riders. She loves horses and owns five.
Three attractive Lea County young ladies have signed up for the Fair and Rodeo Queen Contest this year. They are Alice Breckon of Hobbs, Dianne Ringener and Debbie Lee Elliott of Lovington. The contest is open and more entries are anticipated. Deadline is noon Tuesday. Last year Judy Swift of Hobbs won the crown and later the New Mexico State Fair Queen. Miss Swift and the 1971 contestants will be honored by the Lovington Chamber of Commerce at a luncheon at the Pioneer Steak House Wednesday noon.
Denver reports that leading cowboys are set to enter the Lea County Fair Rodeo in Lovington New Mexico. The event August 18 to 21 includes bareback saddle bronc bull riding calf roping steer wrestling and team tying with a $3 600 purse and stock by Walt Alsbaugh of Alamosa Colorado Entries close at 7 p m August 17. Glen Franklin of House New Mexico a three time world champion calf roper is among early entrants. The rodeo is sanctioned by the Rodeo Cowboys Association which oversaw 547 events producing over 4 1 million in prize money across 42 states and four provinces last year.
Considerable cloudiness persists on the eastern plains through Sunday with localized heavy rainfall near foothills. Cooler conditions Sunday give way to a bit warmer Monday with a 20-30 percent rain chance Sunday and 10-20 percent Sunday night. Lovington reaches 80/64 in NEW MEXICO with thunder showers favored in mountains, lows in 40s to 50s and highs 60s to 70s in the mountains and 75 to 90 elsewhere.
Lea County Fair highlights a Peter Hurd and Henriette Wyeth exhibit at the Lea County Museum on courthouse square. Sponsored by Liberty National Bank, the $8 000 show runs August 18 to 21 with daily hours 9 to 12 and 1 to 5, insured and transported by the bank.
Fall registration dates August 25 26 27 set by College of the Southwest registrar Mrs Inez Livegood. Hours listed 8 12 a m and 1 5 p m. New students urged to seek pre enrollment counseling before August 25 with appointments by calling the college.
Rev and Mrs Gene Hood will lead a revival at the Church of the Nazarene at First and Avenue B Lovington starting this evening at 7 00 p m The Hood family will bring the evangelistic messages and Carolyn and Randy Hood will perform in music Services run nightly through August 22 Pastor Dudley B Anderson invites everyone to attend.
Lea County will receive 51895 from the Office of Civil Defense for the design and construction of an emergency operating center in Hobbs. The center will be a basement addition to the central fire station, with half the cost funded by the grant and half by the community for a total of 103790.
Four year old Pete Kennedy of 2300 North Third was hit while chasing a baseball. At 1 46 he suffered a broken collar bone and possible head injuries. He ran into traffic and was struck by a Mustang driven by Deborah Jane Murray of 1507 West Avenue M. Pete was transported by Smith Rogers ambulance to Lovingston General Hospital and later to Lubbock for concussion assessment by Dr. Jack Dunn.
The First Baptist Church youth choir, 25 strong, performs the musical One Way at 6:45 pm during evening worship. Youth Pastor Brad Layton offers the message after the performance. The show depicts two youths finding purpose from reckless lives to peaceful living. Lovington area residents are invited.
The Lea County Fair lists activity for Tuesday and Wednesday with entries and weigh-ins for market steers and barrows, department entry deadlines, horsemanship for queen contestants, home economics judging, booth judging, flower show entries, and market lamb classifications.
Joanie Hall will entertain at Jake McClure arena during intermission this week with the Long Branch Trio as part of the 1971 Lea County Fair and Rodeo events starting Wednesday.
Sam the Bartender and Newly O’Brien of Gunsmoke will land at Hobbs Lea County Airport at 7 15 tomorrow night an early arrival arranged by the rodeo committee. A large reception team including Lovington Chamber of Commerce Royal Ambassadors and Hobbs Redcoaters will greet them and visit hospitals and nursing homes. Newly is Buck Taylor married to Judy Nugent and will be accompanied by his wife and two children Tiffany and Adam.
In New Mexico 3.45 million from a federal emergency employment act is allocated with Albuquerque receiving 431 thousand and 134 thousand for state agencies in the city. The rest 2.885 million goes to high unemployment communities for jobs in environmental health education public safety housing and rural development. State officials will meet federal officers in Dallas to discuss guidelines with early September disbursement expected.
Eunice beat Albuquerque Valley 7 5 in the state AL finals semifinal at Wildcat Field. Eunice advances to face undefeated Santa Fe in the championship at 1 p m Sunday with a possible second game. Earlier Santa Fe edged Eunice 2 1. Valley ends in third place.
