State and local governments collected about 290 dollars per person in 1966, up from 265 dollars the previous year. The Commerce Clearing House reports a continuing pattern of rising combined state and local tax burdens since 1962, with Hawaii and New York showing the largest five year increases.
Funeral services for James Lloyd Hines will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Tatum Baptist Church with burial in Tatum Cemetery. Officiating is Bro. Milton Thompson. Hines died Sunday morning at Hobbs Lea General Hospital. He was born October 24, 1905. Survivors include his wife Ada of Tatum, two daughters Mrs. A L English of Rock Springs Wyoming and Mrs. A R Stephenson of Tatum, three sisters Mrs Otto Eule of Orville California Mrs W W Barton of Fresno California and Mrs Leo Stevenson of Yuba City California. Two brothers Claude Hines of Clear Lake California and Avery Hines of Yuba City California and five grandchildren.
Two juveniles pled guilty to four counts of burglary and were released to parents with juvenile officer rules and a six month report. Saturnino Saenz released on 30 day trial for non support. Latemer deferment for burglary charges. Floyd Taff arraigned for liquor to minors with $500 bond. James Mainard ordered to pay $20 monthly support.
Senator Clinton P. Anderson announced in his newsletter that 21 federal agencies will spend over 1 billion dollars in New Mexico during the fiscal year starting July 1. The figure reflects federal expenditures across state agencies and programs.
Lovington police report multiple weekend accidents including a 1966 Volkswagen dented on Central by Joe Trujillo’s vehicle with about 75 dollars in damage. Manuel De La Cruz’s 1961 Chevrolet was struck by James Kite causing around 100 dollars damage. Also two cars destroyed at Love and Madison. residents Gonzales and Moreno injured and charged. Separate items cover major federal and New Mexico budgets, including AEC allocations for facility work at Los Alamos and Project Rover costs, and state department spending across Education, Health and Transportation.
Lovington Public Schools announce registration for the 1967-68 term begins Friday at 8:00 a.m. with sessions through Monday August 28. Detailed times for pre first, grades 1 12 and bus enrollment are given, with campuses assigned by residential zones and grade levels.
At Portales, 4 of 12 member towns including Hobbs Jal Eunice and San Jon pledged full support for a water pipeline project to eastern New Mexico. Texico joined, Farwell was deferred, and Clovis Portales not ready while Lovington Tum water groups backed the plan without full commitment. Lloyd Calhoun of Hobbs was re elected president.
Lea County resident Arthur Monroe Tanner died Monday at Lovington Lea General Hospital after 18 years in the county. Funeral services set for Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Northside Baptist Church with Rev. W. L. Cass officiating. burial in Lovington Cemetery. Surviving sons Tim, RB, Harrell, Darrell Tanner. eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Born in Alabama August 28, 1884, Tanner was a Woodmen of the World member.
Lovington hosts a water conference at City Hall with four Lea County municipalities and the county government. The meeting starts at 7 and is led by the Lovington Chamber of Commerce amid uncertainty after Roswell's 34 100 acre feet request and a pending state engineer decision. Local officials aim to forge a united Lea County water plan and consider county actions in the name of the cities.
The Governor's Committee on Reorganization of State Government received preliminary recommendations from nine student interns on seven proposed departments including taxation and revenue, agriculture and conservation, health and welfare, labor, administration, education and personnel, and purchasing. The panel chaired by former Gov. John F. Simms plans to present a final report to the governor, with potential approval impacting the 1968 legislative session.
