The Lea County Farm Tour on Thursday offers a broad view of agriculture's role in the local economy. Leaders from Farm Bureau, agriculture agencies, and the chamber plan an informative, sunlit tour to showcase crops, cattle feeding, and the region's growing agri-business prospects.
The third annual Farm City Tour will start at 1 p m Thursday and showcase Lea County's agri cultural economy for area businessmen and farmers. Attendees will see new farming methods visit crops and a cotton gin while receiving commentary from Lea County Agent Jim Gilstrap. The event includes a 4 30 p m barbecue at Lea County Electric Cooperative with speaker Bill Langenegger president of the New Mexico Farm and Live Stock Bureau. Sponsored by Lea County Extension Service Lovington Chamber of Commerce Lea Farm and Livestock Bureau and Lea Soil and Water Conservation District tickets available at the chamber office or from participants.
The Lovington area forecast calls for clear to partly cloudy skies through Wednesday night with little temperature change. A program showcases cotton varieties and fertilizing, with Albert White Farm demonstrations on stripper cotton versus mechanical picker cotton. Verlon Hilburn Farm features irrigation and forage crops, while R L Davis Farm plans alfalfa operations, castorbean work, and irrigation tech. A 6:30 p m barbecue dinner concludes events with refreshments from local dealers.
The Lea County Sheriff and city police investigated a theft at Mack's Mate Motel where bedspreads sheets and pillow cases disappeared from a clothesline. Suspects were questioned before the case closed when the motel owner's daughter in law admitted taking the linen.
The Senate approved cloture 63 to 27, advancing a privately run but government supervised space communications program. Leetrice Lois Giles of Hobbs files a $100000 complaint in District Clerk William Beauchamp's office against Doris Jorgensen of Hobbs alleging alienation of the plaintiff's husband Charles William Giles. The couple married May 31 1938 and had three children. Damages sought total $100000 with $50000 actual and $50000 exemplary.
