Voters on September 18 will decide whether Lea County builds a courthouse costing 1.2 million dollars. County Commissioners set the date in a special meeting after a petition to require the election was verified. Voting will use printed ballots with some precincts offering a single voting place.
Betsy closes on Florida as squalls threaten Palm Beach to Melbourne with heavy rain and winds. The hurricane center reports 120 mph winds, slowing slightly, eye east of Miami. Warnings issued from Miami to Lake Okeechobee as homes brace and ships and planes evacuate.
Seven people were injured in a trio of Hobbs area auto crashes Saturday evening none seriously. An out of state collision west of Hobbs at US 180 and 176 involved a 1953 Oldsmobile driven by S/Sgt Walter J. Shampaine and a 1953 Mercury driven by Jesse D. Spencer. Shampaine and his child Marion Shampaine were among the injured. A second crash on South Sixth Street hurt two Roswell residents in a 1951 Ford and a 1950 Buick. A late night crash 13 miles south of Pauls Bar on State Road 132 sent three Mexican nationals to Lea General Hospital. one driver faced drunken driving charges.

Three men arrested in Hobbs over the weekend for failing to answer July traffic citations. Frankie Ollie posted 15 dollar bond after a muffler citation. Grant Washington Jr posted 20 dollars for a speeding citation. Worth French posted 15 dollars for a defective muffler. An added ten dollars to fines accompanies the crackdown on ignored citations.
Funeral services were held yesterday for C Clyde Peterson who died at his home northeast of Lovington early Saturday. The service at 2 p.m. was in the First Baptist Church with Rev. Leon Rice officiating and interment at Lovington Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Ilene three sons Martin of Littlefield Buddy and Michael of Lovington three daughters Shirley Davenport Las Cruces Gene Elam Albuquerque and Kay who lives with her mother. Active pallbearers included Lawrence Rice E D Plummer Gordon Gann A O Denman Marion Shields and Kenneth Jates. honorary pallbearers were Tommy Carter E H Byers Buddy Fort C Naul Glen Taylor and W G Edgar.
Mr and Mrs Hugh Graham of Caprock are reportedly vacationing in Florida this week with no further details available.
Police pursued a 1956 Chevrolet driven by G W Campbell on Broadway and Fowler at speeds near 75 mph then over 100 mph and 110 mph during a reckless chase. Campbell was arrested on charges of reckless driving profane language and noisy mutters after a 15 mile pursuit on a cross country highway.
Former Republican official Hodge pleads guilty to embezzling more than 351600 dollars from state money after 46 indictments read at the county courthouse in Illinois.
