Political analysts see the 1966 vote marking a trend in American thinking. An estimated 268,869 children will attend New Mexico public schools this year, up about 3,000 from last year, a 1.2 percent rise. Fifteen year old Leonard Boyce was pulled from a caved in water well after almost a full day trapped. Ground fighting near Tam Ky involved ranger and infantry units versus Viet Cong forces, with reports of 40 guerrilla deaths and American casualties among advisers and helicopters crew. Navy pilots also hit a highway bridge south of Hanoi.
Ollie May Henderson of Hobbs files a hundred thousand dollar negligence suit in district court against Furr's, Inc. She says she slipped on water in the Hobbs store on August 20, 1964, injuring herself. Her attorney is Glen Houston.
President Johnson vetoes a bill to expand life insurance for about 2.5 million federal workers and rejects a larger federal pay raise beyond his 4.5 percent limit. He says the plan costs too much while more crucial needs exist for children, the poor, elderly, and service members. A prior June proposal would add coverage and stabilize the system.
Sixteen rhesus monkeys trained to operate instrument panels completed a two month simulated space mission at Los Alamos. Exposed to up to 1,000 roentgens of gamma radiation, some died but others survived, suggesting astronauts might return a capsule to Earth after lethal doses. The study notes preliminary results and the need for further analysis.
Andrew's self styled fate man Dean Andrews 44 faces a perjury trial in the Kennedy assassination probe after the state rested its case and defense requested a directed verdict. Judge Frank J. Shea planned a Sunday ruling as protracted legal arguments continued.
