Five thousand transportation workers seize the main downtown depot in Lodz, clashing with police as riot squads sweep the area. Communist leader Gomulka orders secret police against a potential revolt, with 200 army trucks deployed to run emergency shuttles.
Police used a new electric speed timer for the first time in Lovington on Sunday. Over 80 motorists were stopped, 32 tickets issued, and more than 50 warnings given as speeds ranged from 35 to 50 plus mph. The device will be used daily and moves to different spots as needed.
Thieves struck two dog houses about 15 to 16 miles west of town over the weekend. They rifled clothing, taking watches and cash from workers at Thompson Drilling Company and John’s Drilling. Items stolen include a white gold pocket watch, a Gruen wrist watch, $31 in cash, and wallets with licenses and registrations.
Paul Young has acquired the Mirror Room on South Turner in Hobbs from Jack Sweet. He also runs Pauls Bar on the Denver City Highway east of Lovington, expanding his local business holdings.
Crop inspectors from New Mexico Crop Improvements Association and the State College Experiment Station will inspect seed crops in Lea County around August 15. J. T. Stovall and Glen Staten will visit 18 local seed producers growing cotton, grain sorghum, pinto beans, chili beans, alfalfa and oats. Farmers away during inspections should notify the county agent to arrange access.
J P Bum Gibbons of Hobbs reported his office entered with a west side window broken. Several checks were taken from a top drawer. Amounts include 11.34 to J C Yoakum, 186.33 to Robert W Welch, 48.92 to A Walker, and 100.00 to J D Brown. Tracks were found near the window. investigation continues.
State Corporation Commission chairman John Block Jr. reports eleven corporations chartered for the week ending Aug 9. New eastern New Mexico firms include S&F Diamond Engineering Inc of Hobbs with $250000 authorized capital and $39000 issued for diamond coring related to oil drilling. Incorporators are E H Chew L H Chew E W Chew and L C Chew. A separate charter was granted to Independent Producers and Royalty Owners Assn of New Mexico based in Roswell to promote independent petroleum producers with no capital yet issued. Incorporators are B M Keohane C C Loveless Jr and J M Campbell.
The Communicable Disease Summary for the week ending August records one case of whooping cough and ten cases of diarrhea and dysentery in Sea Country, which remains low on the chart.
Police report states a man was beside the road on the Denver City Highway a mile east of town early Monday. Officers found him asleep and by awakening him determined he had slept it off. The 10-98 note signified the assignment completed and the officer finished.
M. R. Jones, farmer six miles north of Lovington, reported Sunday that fuses were stolen from an irrigation pump house. He said a battery and the whole pump were previously taken and fears the thieves may return with fuses to operate the equipment.
Warden T M Woodruff announces New Mexico's penitentiary will switch to a 40 hour week for all staff after hiring eight to ten more guards or reallocating duties. The move follows budget reviews, some cost savings, and a plan to reduce turnover among 132 guards. The five day week is expected to begin October 1.
A heavy house trailer overturned on state road 18 just north of the REA plant before 9 a.m. Monday. Two wreckers arrived to upright the load after a back tire blew as the driver, Cornelius Hopkins, 28, Lovington, attempted the curve. State Patrolman O B Sanders said there were no injuries or citations.
Governor Mechem appoints Ben Chavez of Albuquerque as New Mexico state auditor, replacing J D Hannah. Chavez, 34, a Navy Pacific veteran, previously led the Albuquerque State Revenue Bureau and worked for the Bureau of Revenue from 1951 to 1953. He has five children and comes from a large Chavez family in Las Cruces.
House GOP Leader Joseph Martin blocks civil rights legislation, preferring no bill this year over the Senate version. Democrats blame him for killing the measure. Eisenhower signals support for a stronger bill as Knowland defends current form.
Butch Haggerton son of Mr and Mrs A W Haggerton of 1014 W Monroe Ave was rushed to Lea General Hospital Hobbs after falling from a horse returning home from Easleys Lakes The accident occurred near Lovington on the Denver City Highway The horse stumbled over a grass covered gate throwing him into a fence causing cuts to mouth and chin and a possible broken jaw He will be in the hospital at least a week
Boris Morros, 62, a Hollywood composer, ends 12 years posing as a Russian spy while working for the U S counter intelligence. He helped crack a major Red spy ring in New York announcing his retirement and warning of Soviet progress. Morros credited his covert work for arrests and urged vigilance, answering only some questions at the news conference.
The Interior Department announces 85 000 acres in Otero County are restored to public domain after Army Engineers said the area is no longer needed for gunnery ranges at Pyote Clovis and Dalhart. About 24 000 acres of state or private land lie within the restored exterior. BLM will take jurisdiction and accept applications from veterans and others with preference rights starting Sept. 5. The lands are deemed mainly valuable for aging purposes.
Lea County 4 Hers excelled at the Las Cruces state meet earning multiple ribbons. Nelda Richardson McDonald led with a blue ribbon in dress making while Jack Roath and Henry Whitman won individual awards for agriculture and tractor driving. The Lea team trailed Union by about three points in a close contest with Curry third.
Oklahoma Governor Raymond Gary appeals for federal assistance as an anthrax outbreak prompts state health and agriculture officials to launch a dairy by dairy inspection in the northeast region of the state.
Firemen were alerted at 11 36 p m to a small blaze at Parker Rig number 54 four miles west and three miles south of town. Foam water quickly stopped the fire caused by a welding spark. No damage was reported and no injuries occurred.
Lea County reports the pink boll worm, a hard to control pest, the first in the state this year. USDA field reports prompted inspectors to confirm the find, with a potential countywide pink boll worm control program likely requiring plowing under crops and disposal of all waste matter. Farmers urged to watch for the 4- to 3-inch worm and report sightings to the Extension service.
A Lea County committee to promote meat eating and sales will form by mid August. Members include Carl Johnson Jr John Easley Mrs Marvin McClish and James Gilstrap. The group will seek school participation in a meat poster project linked to the New Mexico Meat Institute statewide drive. Gilstrap said a letter from Linda M Lambert institute secretary urged formation as a working organization by August 15.
Hobbs police detained Arthur Scott age 54 of Hobbs after he resisted officers seeking a hit and run suspect at the Blue Room restaurant. Scott was booked for assault on an officer. Six others were arrested for vagrancy, Alfredo Vasquez Aleman 29, Dlorido Garcia 32, Bernardo Quintana 36, Apolonio Salania Rivas 27, Cazarez Lopez Ignacio 23, Antonio Montes Arenivas 27.
Ray Bevel Stil, tool pusher for Crane Drilling Co. of Hobbs, remains in critical condition at Lea Hospital after an automobile crash 17 miles north on the Tatum Highway Friday. Bevel’s car was hit after turning around. three Mexican passengers in the other vehicle were slightly injured.
City officers and Boy Scouts gather for a picnic at City Park with Patrolman J T Polson performing 15 firearm tricks using a .38 pistol. He splits a postal card and snuffs candles placed near an axe edge while a watch is ignited and fired at from 30 feet. Chief James Robinson praises Polson's accuracy.
Ballinger blazed past Lamesa 6 to 1 while Carlsbad at Hobbs was washed out. Ballinger pitcher Bob Leach allowed eight hits in the win. Ballinger faces Lamesa again as Hobbs hosts Carlsbad in a doubleheader with Oilers needing two wins or Ballinger losses to force a tie for first.
