Lovington boys report field experiments on grasshoppers frozen and revived, and observe cicadas near prickly acacia trees. The writer notes curious insect behavior, questions about insect physiology, and playful crashes with local lore, plus Mama’s new car and a wary nod to rest and work.
Carroll Kenneth Spiller, 43, of Hobbs, charged with fraud under 100 dollars with a 500 dollar bond. Jack DeWayne Castleberry, 22, of Hobbs, charged with assault. 200 dollar bond posted and he released. John B. Driver, 22, of Seminole, Texas, charged with drunk and disturbance. jailed in lieu of 50 dollar bond.
Gemini II astronauts Charles Conrad and Richard Gordon will launch September 9 from Cape Kennedy in a record 862 mile high flight. The 71 hour mission includes an attempted first orbit rendezvous with the Agena target, a spacewalk, and an automatic returns dive to Earth. Gordon will tether to the Agena and tie the line to Gemini 11 during the spacewalk.
The Leader starts a Q and A series with Mayor A L Hahn on the September 13 sale tax election. Five questions arrive by mail about the tax and youth center funding from cigarette taxes, rent use, and reactions to the so called computer answers.

The 62nd Armored Field Artillery Battalion Association plans a two day reunion August 19 and 20 in Lovington New Mexico. Host member W T Ted Hester reports reservations from former members across coasts and notes the group grew from a 1947 start with a 1965 Lovington gathering.

Yesterday’s Lovington high was 90 at 3 00 p.m. and low 66 at 5 00 a.m. State highs yesterday reached 50 at Las Vegas and Raton. Year to date Lovington precipitation stands at 6.01 inches.
Lovington High School announces evening classes for grades nine to twelve to help students earn a high school diploma. Classes run 5 00 p m to 7 20 p m and 7 30 p m to 9 50 p m Monday through Thursday with courses in biology mathematics and social studies and electives under consideration. Tuition is free for students enrolled in more than one course and 30 00 for single course enrollees.
Tomorrow Lovington hosts the first New Mexico Little Miss Pageant with over 50 contestants. The event runs Saturday 1 p.m. rehearsal, 7:30 p.m. show, and Sunday 2 p.m. final judging. Winners receive certificates trophies banners and paid entry to the International Pageant in Dallas. Contestants hail from Lovington Hobbs Eunice Tatum Los Alamos Las Cruces Jal White Rock and Carlsbad.
Yesterday's Leader front page featured Terri Worrell and Debbie Wirt in a mirrored image due to a reversed negative in offset printing. The error flipped their likenesses, causing confusion about who is who. readers are assured the original identities remain Terri and Debbie.
The State Corporation Commission withdrew its petition against Midwest truckers who proposed a 3 percent freight rate increase into New Mexico. The withdrawal followed an offer by the Midwest Motor Freight Bureau to adjust New Mexico rates, with slope rates amounting to a reduction for New Mexico even if the 3 percent is adopted later. Harlan said the action would remove New Mexico and Arizona from Midwest shipping areas.
State dues for the American Legion will rise by September 1. Local posts plan to raise their own dues and collect payments by mail or through contacting any legion member.
