Major Andrian Nikolayev, 32, floats weightlessly in the Soviet capsule as he enters a second day in orbit. Khrushchev hails the mission on television while speculation grows about a two-man flight and a potential moon mission milestone.
Lea County 4-H contestants returned from the 38th annual state contest in Las Cruces with 14 blue ribbons 5 red ribbons and one white ribbon. The crops judging team won the state sweepstakes award with each member receiving 25 and a medal from the New Mexico Crop Improvement Association. Team members included Jimmy Barton Perl Harris Wayne Thompson and Gary Stine.
A butane truck and a pickup collided on a dirt road near Hale Center Texas, causing a fiery explosion that killed seven. The victims include Milton Wesley Boone 38 and his five year old daughter Sherry Jean in the butane truck. The five in the pickup were identified as Mr and Mrs Billy Joe Owens two daughters and a son from Abernathy Texas.
House investigators open hearings to determine if four space communication programs Rep. Joseph E. Karth says duplicate effort and waste time and money. Witnesses include Gen. Bernard A. Schriever and Finn J. Larsen as questions focus on Relay Syncom Advent and Telstar.
Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Jack M. Campbell spoke at the New Mexico Broadcasters Association midyear convention outlining plans to expand the state's economic development. He urged political maturity and long range planning to attract industry and promised collaboration with local business and existing resources to create a favorable climate. Other speakers urged clear weathercasting and editorial responsibility while highlighting the role of stations in community identification.
Youthful inmates at the Kansas State Industrial Reformatory rioted Saturday night injuring two guards slightly. Warden John D. Munns said trouble began around 10 10 p m EDT and was under control within a half hour as guards used tear gas and shotgun blasts. No inmates were reported injured.
The United States and the State Department say no high altitude nuclear tests are planned that could interfere with Soviet cosmonaut Andrian Nikolayev’s orbital flight. James Webb of NASA expressed goodwill and cited interest in his safe return.
A 16 year old Negro “reverse freedom rider” arrived penniless at Salvation Army headquarters in Lawrence Massachusetts after a New Orleans bus trip. Charles Thomas of New Orleans said a man unknown to him offered a job and a one way ticket but provided no money, leaving him hungry for two days. He said two other riders accompanied him but he did not know their destination.
The Lovington Business and Professional Woman's Club survey shows most residents buy locally across categories from food to machinery. It notes 52 responses favor local trade, with 86 percent buying local machinery and 90 percent clothing locally, while many call for better courtesy, service, and more local competition.
