A New Mexico Tax Bulletin article reports Santa Fe High School Juniors scoring above the state average on ACE tests with 10 percent above the New Mexico average and 165 below. Lovington comparisons show mixed results with most juniors at or above the NM average.
Funeral services for Justice of Peace Tom Finn of Hobbs were held at 4 30 p m Saturday at First Methodist Church Hobbs with Rev Jim Hall officiating. Burial followed at Prairie Haven Cemetery under Griffin Funeral Home arrangements.
Lovington High Varsity Band will meet 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and Junior High Cadet Band 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. on August 20. Cadet and Varsity members should attend at their respective band buildings. instruments not required for the first rehearsal.
Washington UP Secretary Mitchell predicts a majority of American workers will vote for President Eisenhower this year. He credits a high income and employment level to the climate that produced jobs and high wages.
A doghouse on the Hall and Stuart Drilling Co. lease four miles north of Lovington was broken into Friday night. Officials are checking to determine the total loss.
Lea County plans the largest cotton crop on record with an estimated 142 bales per acre and 28 000 acres. Picking should start in September with one inch middling white as the new grading standard. Mills are not buying now, but could boost later sales, affecting storage and prices around 3295 per pound equivalent.
Enrollment for the 1956-57 school year runs August 20 to 24 with grade by precinct locations. North of Avenue D pupils attend Jefferson or Llano Elementary as labeled, while high and junior high enrollments occur at designated campuses. A 12 year old boy detained on US Route 66 west of Tucumcari admits he is Kenneth Lewis, not Larry Barklett. He left his St. Louis home August 1 and told police he ran away with his parents near Edgewood, New Mexico. His parents were notified and traveling to Tucumcari.
Clyde Peterson of McDonald area died Saturday morning about 7:30. He had been ill and treated by a physician Friday. He is survived by his wife and family. Funeral services are pending.
Forecasters predict widely scattered showers this weekend with activity rising after Monday. Temperatures should run near seasonal norms, about 2 to 5 degrees above in the southeast and northwest contrasts. A cooler trend is expected in the north after the first of the week with high daytime highs around 85 to 100 and lower 80s in the north later. Nightly lows range from the mid 40s to 60s in the north and 60s to 70s in the south.
Seven horses at the Lovington Roping Club grounds were released Friday evening. One mistreated filly noted. Deputy Sheriff Les Villars suspects teen activity. Horses owned by Bells Food, J. E. Mauldin, Elmer Williams, three by Jim Reed, and one owner unknown. Two found nearby, four at Lovington Airport, one Reed horse still at large at 9 am Saturday.
A three car North Shore electric passenger train rear ended a freight train in Waukegan Illinois on Thursday night. Thirty six persons were injured none seriously. The north bound train hit the coal gondola stopping one block south of the station. The lead car and gondola were crumpled and two cars derailed. No warning lights were at the rear of the freight train.
A Georgia official urged a regional campaign to wipe out the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, signaling a push to end the civil rights organization.

Police report two men armed with toy pistols entered Travis Brown’s residence at 515 S McKinley St Hobbs Friday afternoon rifling drawers and upsetting his wife’s purse. They fled after eating chicken left in the icebox leaving the toy weapons behind. No other items were taken.
Joyce Duncan of Hobbs won first place in a public speaking contest at a Hobbs 4-H meeting held in Las Cruces over the weekend. Lovington 4-H leader Mrs W L Tucker won an all expense trip to the national convention.
