Talent scouts select Terri Worrell and Debbie Wirt of Lovington for the Governor Campbell State Youth Conference at Sandia Base Albuquerque August 14 to 17. They will perform a twirling duet and join the event after winning state level awards. Both are longtime majorettes and Rainbow for Girls members. Terri is a senior and Debbie a junior at Lovington High School.
Lovington high school senior Durward Benham Jr. joins 29 peers at the Future Engineers Show of the Western Electronic Show and Convention in Los Angeles August 23 26. He will present Properties of Ultrasonics and compete for 2800 in scholarships with tours of Los Angeles centers and a awards luncheon. Each participant receives travel expenses and a 25 savings bond.
The city reports a July record with water pumping surpassing 100 million gallons and a storage tank never dropping below 38 feet. A total of 206 cats were picked up and destroyed in July, with rabies fears driving the rise, and a peak period between July 13 and 21 marking the heaviest cat extermination in city history.
Lea County farms near Lovington operate several large truck farms growing cantaloupe onions and other vegetables. Cantaloupe from Harada farms is shipped to Denver while onions head to Colorado Florida West Virginia New Jersey Tennessee Texas Oregon and other states. Most produce goes to wholesale distributors rather than local grocers.
Gov. Jack M. Campbell said he knew of the Martin-Marietta Corp plans to build an Albuquerque aerospace plant for over a month and expressed delight. State Development Department and State Land Office aided the firm in obtaining information about New Mexico.
NMJC announces the appointment of Mrs. Mary Boyd Hagelstein as an accounting instructor. She holds a BA and MA in accounting from Baylor University and is a certified public accountant. Hagelstein arrives from Colorado after six years as a private accountant in Lubbock and prior experience in Texas public schools and San Diego accounting firms.
A State Finance Board rule barring employees from bidding on public property faces trouble from a six year old attorney general opinion. The 1960 view says no law prohibits highway employees from buying at department auctions and could be bypassed by shifting property to the state purchasing agent for sale.
Several persons were arrested yesterday on various charges. Jerry Don Beasley 30 Brownfield charged with assault with a deadly weapon and bonded at 2000. Clara Jean Setser 22 arrested on a worthless check warrant from Hobbs in Los Angeles. James Houston Setser 25 charged with worthless check and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle. advised of rights, bond 1600.
In Pasadena a lunar orbiter speeds toward the moon on an uncorrected flight while scientists and computers interpret telemetry from Madrid and the JPL to assess the vehicle attitude and necessary midcourse adjustments. The 850 pound probe launched from Cape Kennedy Wednesday and aims to return 352 lunar surface photos with a midcourse maneuver possible in three days.
Lovington Chamber members received a mailed, double sided legal letter arguing the city sales tax merits attention though not endorsing it. The board noted a need for revenue to fund services and urged citizens to study the issue before the September 13 vote while detailing income tax redistribution and net revenue estimates.
Police report an early morning crash in the 300 block of Avenue D involving a 1961 Oldsmobile F-85 driven by Karen Kay Taylor 16 of 818 West Avenue F. The car struck a tree near 324 West Avenue D. Miss Taylor was taken for examination. no citations issued. Vehicle is a total loss.

The regional director of the 16th district of the National Labor Relations Board notified Local 826 of the International Union of Operating Engineers that the union election for Ralph Lowe Drilling Company Employees has been postponed. The rescheduling date has not yet been set. C. E. Gressett represents Local 826.
The local sheriff's department responded to a 2:53 a.m. break‑in at the B E Border Bar. Entry via the roof. about $60 in cash from vending machines and 10 pints of liquor worth $500 taken. Liquor recovered about 100 yards behind a billboard. Goods removed with a plastic pail. Investigation ongoing.
