United Press reports President Eisenhower will veto or reject the civil rights bill if the Senate retains a jury trial guarantee. The White House insists the clause be removed before any signing decision, with the president not signaling a final stance until Congress completes its deliberations.
The administration hopes to strip the jury trial clause as the bill moves from Senate to House. A five vote Republican shift could give a slim Senate edge, but the House is poised to push for conference to remove or weaken the proviso. Eisenhower faces a potential filibuster if talks fail.
Mrs Natalie Smith Buck secretary of State instructs county boards to begin a biennial voter registration purge within 90 days of October 21. Clerks must report estimated Notice of Pending Cancellation cards and the state will supply them. A 1957 amendment requires commissioners to divide or consolidate precincts by the first Monday in December.
Ten cases filed in district court include Leon Rice and Lea County Lumber Co vs George W Bradford and others seeking 838.69. Bill Blocker and Cos Mex Oil Co vs Robert Gilbert for 2470.10. Edward Puryear vs Ferguson Truck Co. Bessie B Clemens vs James I Clemens for divorce and child custody. Andra Idleman vs Herrel Idleman for divorce and custody of three. Leo Moore vs United Carbon Co seeking 125000 for injuries from an accident at Wildman Machine and Welding Shop of Tatum on December 14, 1956.
A July report shows 23 dogs picked up and 33 killed at the Lovington pound. Five dogs and two cats were claimed or killed. The poundmaster bought 12 boxes of 22 shells, 50 shells per box, raising alarm about dog safety.
Mrs. Howard Gilchrist, superintendent of the baked foods division, invites homemakers to enter six classes at the Lea County Fair in Lovington September 12 to 14. Entries due by noon September 11. About twenty baked entries were shown in 1956. Fair books available at local chambers and the county extension office.
A July police report shows 514 tickets issued and 264 dollars paid for parking meters, leaving 250 unpaid. The department recorded 40 arrests, 85 traffic citations, 16 accidents, 514 parking meter tickets, and 76 drivers examinations. Fire calls included a tank battery fire seven miles west on Artesia Highway, a trash fire on South Main, and a grass fire in the southeast.
Edward Harris Jr son of Mrs Dorothy Lee Merritt of Hobbs New Mexico enlisted in the United States Air Force for four years on August 5 1957 He was flown to Lackland Air Force Base San Antonio Texas for Basic Military Training and will undergo USAF Career Testing to determine aptitudes for Technical Training.
L J Morgan to lead new public relations department at Lea County Electric Cooperative R B Moore announces Morgan from Clayton Co operative will move to Lovington with wife and three children before Sept 1 He will head public relations as the cooperative expands rapidly and requires PR oversight.
State police report a one car accident on US 85 in Albuquerque near Fourth Northeast after rain left three dead and two critically injured. Victims are Parrish M. Odem 47 Ealine Brewer 30 Alvin Greenwood. three children survived with varied injuries. The 1957 toll rose to 263 with 33 more deaths than a year ago today.
The South edged the North 57 to 56 at Highland High School Gym in Albuquerque. Hobbs star Bill Bridges scored 29 points, delivering the decisive two with 1:30 left as Highland’s Dick Cundy led North with 16. Crowd 3,200 watched the seventh straight South win in the series.
Fortuna Corporation files with the state racing commission to build a race track on US 80, forty two miles from Las Cruces and four miles north of El Paso. J. E. Ruffin, Albuquerque oil firm executive, heads the project. Racing would begin in October for a 45 day season from October to January.
Sheriff Jewell McAdoo will convene Lea and Eddy County officers who worked on the July 23 triple murder of two Hobbs divorcees and a Carlsbad truck driver. The courthouse meeting in Hobbs aims to exchange information while excluding the press.
William R. Holder, 56, of Denton Texas, was arrested Friday afternoon in Lovey by City police on charges of being drunk. He is to appear before Judge Reese Greaves Saturday. A check of his record shows 126 arrests in Lee County since 1920, most on drunkenness or disturbing the peace. Holder is married with three children.
Lovington rural mail carrier A B Perkins crashed his car into the rear of a plane three miles east of Prairieview on Friday. The aircraft owned by Homer Youngblood Jr. was being crop dusted and landed on a dirt road, dusting the road and obscuring Perkins's view. The plane was grounded with unknown damage. Perkins escaped injury though his car sustained damage. Perkins lives at 318 West Adams and has recently complained about low-flying planes on his mail route.
Governor mechem announces a traffic safety program led by State Purchasing Agent C. L. Mears under the Department of Revenue. B. V. Roberts of Silver City will be acting purchasing agent, aiding Mears. The division replaces the legislature killed traffic safety commission with a $1 annual appropriation.
A fast moving blaze in Las Vegas New Mexico destroyed the Daily-Optic newspaper building. Fire broke out about 7 p.m. Friday and was confined to the structure. All equipment was wrecked or damaged and the roof collapsed. cause not yet determined.
A former state employee 41 year old Freda M. O Neal was found guilty of embezzling six thousand two hundred dollars from the Albuquerque branch of the drivers license division while in charge.
Ray Bevel of Hobbs, a Crane Drilling Can tool pusher, was critically injured Friday afternoon 17 miles north of Tatum when his vehicle collided with a car driven by a Mexican national. Three Mexican occupants were slightly hurt. both cars were totaled. Bevel was flown from Odessa, Texas, for treatment. He manages Pauline's Style Shop in Hobbs.
Senator John Kennedy proposes moving the controversial ambassador to Ceylon to a different assignment. The suggestion came as a solution to the ongoing dispute surrounding the diplomat’s tenure in Colombo.
