Kennedy Signs Omnibus Farm Bill Today
President Kennedy signed a broad farm bill at the White House to cut grain surpluses and raise prices. Farmers must cut wheat plantings by 10 percent for 45 percent yield payments, with durum wheat exempted, and further 30 percent cuts in 1962 for 60 percent yield payments. Corn, feed barley and grain sorghum faces loss of price supports unless planting drops 20 percent from 1959-60 averages. Payments on reduced acreage reach 50 percent of normal yield, continuing the 1961 feed grains program and marking a shift toward more government action in farming policy.

Four Auto Crashes Reported In Lovington Weekend
Lovington police investigated four weekend auto mishaps with no injuries but hundreds in damage. A 1957 Buick driven by Eva Armstrong struck a 1957 Lincoln at Main and Central, with $750 damage to the Buick and $330 to the Lincoln. A Sunday crash at Ave G and 4th involved two Chevrolets, with $400 and $200 damage. yield sign cited but no charges. A 1961 Oldsmobile and a 1955 Pontiac collided at Jackson and Main. Miles was arrested for reckless driving. A youth pushing another vehicle caused a 1951 Chevrolet to hit a frame house, $25 house damage, citation to Freddie Nash.

Carl Howell Hopper of Lovington will receive the MS degree in natural sciences at Oklahoma State University summer exercises set for 9 a m Saturday August 5 in the OSU field house. Summer graduates total 537, with 273 undergraduate degrees, 257 advanced degrees and seven associate degrees. Commissioners Open Bids Discuss Equipment Monday
County commissioners spent most of their meeting yesterday reviewing bids on eight items and accepting three contracts. Burroughs Corp. of Detroit won the county tax office computer and supplies contract at 11385 and 11795.55 dollars, and Leevington Ford Sales won a 1961 four-door station wagon bid for the county engineer at 2169.33. Border Machinery Co. of Carlsbad won a trailer mounted pump bid at 1765.30. Other bids for a crushing plant bulldozer caliche material hot mix were discussed but no action taken. The session also approved Mrs. A E Risinger as Eunice Public Library treasurer. The meeting adjourned about 4 p.m.

Fred Smith Fails to Place in JC Road-E-O Contest

Johnny Dodson of 1019 W Ty ler reported seeing cosmonaut Gherman Titov in Vostok II pass over Lexington twice early Monday morning. He slept on his patio Sunday night to watch the Soviet capsule. the first pass occurred between 12 15 and 12 38 a.m traveling due east and the second at 2 15 a.m traveling southeast. No other witnesses reported viewing the capsule.
