Judge Tom Finn was fatally injured in a motor vehicle accident at Mineral Wells. The incident prompted a federal news report touching on the Suez crisis and Eisenhower remarks. The president pledged patience on school integration and said he would undergo a full medical check before the November election.
Hydrologist E G Minton outlines plans to form the Lea County Conservancy District within Lea County’s Tea County underground water basin. Petitions seek one third support from property owners. district funding via up to 0.75 mill annual assessments to prevent floods and divert rainfall to the basin. Two well known Fort Worth men, Jess M. Hickey 70 and Louis M. White 63, face federal charges of mail fraud over oil lease investments in Utah. They posted $2,500 bond each after surrendering in Fort Worth following a secret grand jury indictment in Dallas last week.
Hobbs city commissioners appointed a five member planning board with two year terms for Reed and Green, others for one year, and drew lots to assign terms. A water well contract plan and tax study committee were approved, plus capital improvement priorities for water, sewers, streets, and sanitation. Justice of the Peace Tom Finn was fatally injured in a Mineral Wells area automobile crash while en route to St Louis for the Democratic convention.
Leonard Griffith was sentenced to 90 days by Judge Green after an attempted breaking and entering at a motel cabin where he resided. He was shot in the arm during the incident and faces a suspended sentence of six months to three years on related break-in charges from April.
Thome J D Parsons of Tatum was released from Lovington county jail Tuesday after pleading guilty to simple assault and battery. He had been charged with assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm last June, but received credit for time served and was discharged. Parsons reportedly fired at officers at his home during arrest and refused to exit for hours. Deputy Joe Price entered the window to avoid force.
Tatum Justice of the Peace Otis Bailey was found severely injured by a cowboy 15 miles west of Tatum. He was moved to a nearby rancher’s home and then transported by ambulance to Roswell for treatment after a loss of blood in a field incident.
Kenneth R. Renfro, 36, of 209 E White St Hobbs was arrested at 2 p m Tuesday on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicating beverages. He was jailed in lieu of a 125 dollar bond.
Norfolk Virginia A Navy court martial convicts Commander Richard Varley of negligence for taking command of the Destroyer Escort Eaton without checking course and speed as Eaton and the Battleship Wisconsin collided during a maneuver. The collision left Eaton on a collision course with Wisconsin.
Kefauver may lose the number two spot as Adlai Stevenson nears the presidential nomination at the Chicago convention. Benton criticizes Republican foreign policy while police report four speeders under a “Learn to be Careful” campaign.
Mrs Sam Dalmont of Hobbs and her daughter Mrs Carlos Cartlidge of Bakersfield California visited Monday and Tuesday at the home of Mrs E H Byers in Lovington.
U S Steel boosted its prices by an average 8 5 00 per ton to offset higher labor costs from a three year contract with the United Steelworkers Union. Auto steel up about 16 dollars per car refrigerator 1 and toaster four to five cents. Production resumes after a 35 day strike with full output in about three weeks. Jimmie Prince was bitten by a dog near Hobbs pool, dog owned by Dr. Bell kept under observation 10 days.
Hobbs resident H. L. Baker, 42, of 216 N. Cecil, was arrested Tuesday evening for violating a driver's license revocation. Police say he had prior drunk driving arrest on April 14, 1956, with a one year license suspension.
Escar B. Stover, 24, of 305 E Alston Hobbs, was arrested Tuesday on four warrants issued by Sheriff Emmons Bruton Alabama. Charges the subject is wanted on were listed as unknown by local police.
A South 4th Street resident reports boys have been stealing unripe peaches and using green pellets as weapons in fights. Police monitor the trees as the homeowner warns the youths of potential trouble and property rights violations.

Hobbs Plainview game fans vote Carlos Pascual nicknamed Tater as Most Popular Player with prizes including gift certificates and an electric razor. Oscar Chinique receives a cigarette lighter and a Penney’s sport shirt. Other awards go to Pete Aldazabal Ossie Alvarez Dan Dobbek for runs batted in and best shortstop.
A Lovington woman, Mrs. Roy Brown of 1604 South Love, was rushed to Lea General Hospital after swallowing an unknown amount of fly spray. Patrolman M L Payne attempted first aid, but a doctor could not be secured locally, and the ambulance was eventually sent to Hobbs. Authorities say the incident is believed accidental.
E. J. Galindo a Hobbs resident and juvenile suspect was turned over to Texas authorities Tuesday afternoon. He rode with R. H. Skiles, an ex convict, when State Patrolman A. W. Payne nabbed them Sunday morning. Galindo admitted being with Skiles for 16 Texas robberies and confessed his role in the Texas case while denying New Mexico involvement.
Two Hobbs men Leslie Harris 27 of the S&S Hotel and John L Moose McDonald 26 of 512 East White Street were arrested at 2 20 am Tuesday near the S S Hotel on fighting and disturbing the peace charges. Both held in lieu of 40 dollar bonds.
John D. Fuller of Kermit Texas reported to police in Hobbs that two hubcaps were stolen from his 1956 Mercury on Saturday night.
An 84 year old Indian man, Tom Hostin Nez Begay of Shiprock, died at a Farmington hospital from injuries suffered last Saturday when struck on horseback near Waterflow. His horse was hit by a vehicle driven by 18 year old Phillip Moody of Fruitland. The death is New Mexico’s 225th highway fatality.
Clyde Jasper Newman 41 and Jessie James Gilmore 32 of 620 E Broadway Hobbs were arrested Tuesday on drunkenness charges and jailed in lieu of $15 bonds.
Elton Cox of Portales is visiting his parents Mr and Mrs Marlin Cox at 1001 West Taylor in Lovington. He plans to travel to Oklahoma this weekend to bring back his wife and their 18 month old son from relatives there.
