The IRS canceled the tax exempt status of Protestants and Americans United POAU after 18 years as a recognized group, labeling it an activist organization. The move is questioned as capricious political enforcement amid broader tax issues among conservative groups.
The U S Command says 139 Americans were killed in Vietnam last week up 25 percent from two weeks earlier. South Vietnamese deaths totaled 276 with 2 565 wounded reported among allied forces during a seven day period ending last Saturday.
Span ish American leader Reies Lopez Tijerina asks the Supreme Court for bail pending his appeal of an assault conviction. He is jailed in Santa Fe after his bond was revoked for his June 8 disturbance on the Santa Fe National Forest and faces federal assault charges involving Forest Service officers.
Mrs Louvenia Hammons mother of Dale Hammons of Loving ton died Wednesday in Roswell after a period of ill health. Funeral services are Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Ballard Funeral Home chapel Roswell with burial at South Park Cemetery. Hammons was employed at Phillips Gasoline Plant here.
Governor Cargo asked the Four Corners Regional Commission for up to 12,198 in federal funds to plan a regional area vocational school serving San Miguel Guadalupe and Mora counties. The state owns Camp Luna Job Corps facilities in Las Vegas for a technical training site.
The New Mexico Constitutional Convention approved a rule to complete its work within 60 consecutive days. The 55 to 14 vote sets a timetable from Aug 5 with adjournment aimed by Oct 3. Bruce King to name committee chairs and vice presidents, while a lobbyist reporting proposal was rejected 40 to 29.
In Washington AP report Senators John J. Williams and Clinton P. Anderson, long undecided on Nixon’s ABM deployment, announced three votes against scrapping or restricting ABM. Williams, 65, plans retirement. Anderson, former Agriculture secretary, defends a guarded deployment policy while opposing public polling on Senate views.

The Tucumcari Quay County Chamber of Commerce urged speeding up Interstate 40 construction after a series of deadly crashes on two lane U S 66 east of Tucumcari. A meeting with officials from the state and federal road agencies was planned. Mountain Bell manager B D Brazier cited dangers and said service trucks would switch from U S 66 to alternate routes or county roads to reach San Jose and Glenrio near the New Mexico Texas border.
Dist Court Judge Frank Zinn issued a temporary restraining order against picketing violence and intimidation by the New Mexico Building and Construction Trades Council. Southwest Constructors asks for the order as El Paso Natural Gas builds compressor units at two El Paso plants. A hearing is set for Aug. 18, with limits of two picketers per site. Earlier rock throwing and gunfire were reported with no serious injuries.
Rep Ed Foreman of the 2nd Congressional District will visit about 60 communities in 18 counties during the late August congressional recess. He travels with a mobile office trailer to meet constituents in Lovington and across the state, visiting Gallup Santa Fe Albuquerque Clovis Portales and multiple towns and suburbs, with an hour by hour itinerary to be released.
