Lovington sees new growth amid construction and acknowledgments

The Lovington community reports increased construction with three new service stations near completion and several new businesses in, including activity around the 7-11 on Jackson Ave. A $1 million junior high school project progresses as plans for more ventures surface. Nancy Short, Miss Lovington 1962, departs for Wayland College, leaving a legacy at the Leader and prompting public thanks and reflection.

Finkbines Slack Up On Abortion Plans

Mrs. Sherri Finkbine, Phoenix actress, did not visit a Swedish doctor as planned jeopardizing a quick abortion. Her husband said they spent hours with friends and the couple may not file the required application before the state medical board meeting next Friday.

Lockamy In Court Today For Lovington Murder Charge

G Marie Lockamy 82, of Home stead Florida, will appear in Lovington District Court Tuesday on first degree murder charges in the July 21 shooting death of Edsel N Hurst. She has been held without bond. Assistant District Attorney Joseph Walton said Lockamy admitted firing the shot with a German made pistol after an argument claiming it was an accident. He quoted her saying Hurst had beaten her in the past and she retrieved the pistol from his car, returned to the hotel room and fired. Hurst died from an chest wound from the shot.

Lovington Contestant Leads Wheatheart Pageant

Jan Coady, 20, Lovington’s Miss Loving ton 1951, will compete in the Miss Wheatheart Of The Nation pageant on August 18 in Perryton Texas. The Lovington Jaycees sponsor her as she competes with entrants from Kansas to New Mexico for a trip to the World’s Fair and wheat promotion duties.

Lovington announces 1962-63 enrollment schedule and class start

Superintendent H. C. Pannell outlined the enrollment plan for the 1962-63 Lovington school term. Registration runs August 17 to 20 with a staggered timetable and classes resume August 27. Bus students and new enrollees have specified four day windows.

71 Miraculously Escape In Crash

An American Airlines turboprop carrying 71 people including two congressmen crashed while trying to land in Knoxville during a thunderstorm. Only minor injuries reported: a broken foot to Mrs. Rachel L. Dix and a lump on the head of Sharon Sue Newman. The plane from Dallas to New York touched down amid 44 mph gusts. passengers were evacuated into a rainstorm.

Mountain States Tax Ruling Sparks State Debate

A district court in Santa Fe upheld Mountain States Telephone's protest that the New Mexico State Tax Commission varied property assessments among tel ephone companies and other firms. The commission plans to appeal to the State Supreme Court as hearings continue on 1962 to 1963 valuations. Mountain States and American Telephone and Telegraph challenged equality of assessments across counties and corporations.

Monroe death mystery fuels Hollywood grief

Eunice Murray testified Miss Monroe heard a mysterious phone call before dying from a barbiturate overdose. Police noted 4.5 milligrams of barbiturates per 100 cubic centimeters of blood with no alcohol. An empty Nembutal bottle lay on her nightstand as autopsy and toxicology planned for Tuesday.

Registration Underway at College in Hobbs

The College of the Southwest in Hobbs announces registration for the seventh fall semester since the school moved. Enrollment is expected to double or triple prior levels, with high demand across courses in all five divisions. Prospective and regular students are urged to seek pre-registration counsel from Dr. Nell McLeroy this week for advance planning.
