Explorer VI launched from Cape Canaveral aboard a Thor Able III rocket at 9 23 a m and achieved an 11 hour orbit. The 142 pound craft carries eight thousand solar cells and 15 experiments to study radiation belts and Earth cloud cover.
A truck loaded with explosives exploded in Roseburg Oregon early today causing extensive blast damage across surrounding blocks. Authorities reported numerous casualties and a large emergency response as investigators work to determine the cause.
Reports say President Eisenhower may invite Soviet Premier Khrushchev to Camp David for informal talks during his U S visit beginning Sept 15. The plan aims to ease Cold War tensions in a private mountain retreat rather than at the White House.
Services were conducted at the First Methodist Church for John W. Waddill father of Lovington residents J. Dean Waddill and Mrs. E. M. Hester. He died Wednesday in a Hambherst Texas hospital at age 88. Burial followed in Lovington Cemetery with brief service led by Rev. Ed Hamilton. Survived by two sons a daughter two brothers ten grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
The Texas Legislature completed a 56th session after 201 working days with the House approving a 2.410 billion dollar appropriations bill 108 to 30. Senators had earlier approved the measure amid a second fight on the House floor.
State and city crews launched a wide cleanup as heavy rain triggered flash floods across New Mexico. Gallup residents fled five foot floods while Santa Fe and Albuquerque faced rain soaked hillsides and road closures. Authorities estimated damage but Nagging high water marks and damag e assessments lagged. Carlsbad registered 100 plus degree heat while temperatures fell elsewhere.
Don Wallace, manager of the Skating Palace, reported a skate theft to city police. A pair of black size 10 skates with red wheels and brown back strips, valued at 120 dollars, vanished between 9:45 and 10 p.m. after a crowded evening.
The New Mexico Open begins with Jal stars Hardy Loudermilk and Chris Blocker leading as favorites. About 100 players registered for 54 holes through Sunday, with pro and amateur flights and a Governor’s Cup prize for the winner. Entry is $32 for Pro-Am Sunday and amateurs use handicaps.
The New Mexico Highway Commission meets to keep 2000 workers employed as federal road funds dwindle. It canceled planned pay raises for 700 employees costing about 500000 and suspended further raises while finances stay precarious. The panel will meet weekly to await possible federal aid restoration and considers funding from state sources if needed. The action signals potential layoffs if Congress does not restore funds.
The state Supreme Court affirmed a Lea county jury award to L. H. Terry who was struck and injured by an automobile in Lovington on January 23, 1956. He sued driver L. A. Biswell and owner B. C. Eppler for damages.
Memphis State University in Tennessee accepted six Negro students for the fall term, the first group admitted since President Jack Smith announced in July that the formerly all white state school would admit qualified Negroes.
