Shortage Hits New Mexico Union Welfare Fund

Cecil Goodwin Dies Suddenly at 53 in Tatum
Funeral services are pending for Cecil Edward Goodwin 53 of Tatum who died August 6 en route to the hospital after a heart attack. Survivors include his widow twin sons Tommy and Cecil two grandchildren a brother Frank Goodwin of Hobbs and a long residence in Tatum. He operated businesses in Lovington Hobbs and Tatum.

A 35 year old woman in a wheelchair, Elizabeth Moore, was struck and killed on U S 85 in a suspected hit and run. Her daughter Jane, 17, pushed her north when the vehicle hit them, flinging Moore 65 feet. Pamela, 13, riding a bicycle nearby, suffered minor injuries.

Three Die As Ambulance And Train Collide
An ambulance in El Paso ran in front of a Southern Pacific freight train, killing ambulance driver Robert Richey 26 attendant Darrell Day 24 and patient Mrs Vera Dominguez 32 who was being rushed from another crash. The train dragged the wreckage six blocks before stopping. Train engineer Floyd L Conway said I didn’t see the ambulance coming. Richey was an El Paso policeman and Day a staff sergeant at Biggs Air Force Base, both part time drivers.

Two tankers collided in dense fog off Fort Adams and burst into flames. Coast Guard in Boston reported at least three dead and 25 missing, with 22 rescued. Vessels named SS Gulfoil from Philadelphia and SS Graham, a coastal tanker, were involved. The Gulfoil carried 120000 barrels of oil to Providence before sailing toward Port Arthur, Texas.

A Greenville ten year old boy Warren Crosby Ha good was found prostrate behind a service station and sent to a funeral home as dead. Mortuary staff detected life and he was rushed to a hospital where doctors found acute appendicitis and performed immediate surgery. Condition was fair with good recovery chances.

AEC Plans Underground Nuclear Test Near Carlsbad
The Atomic Energy Commission announced plans to explode a small device underground in the Delaware Basin near Carlsbad New Mexico to study producing power and radioisotopes from nuclear explosions. The detonation is set for summer 1959 and will occur in a 1200 foot salt bed shaft to confine heat.
