Police chief Lloyd Smith announced a city wide push to enforce all traffic laws before school opens. Citations will be issued for left side parking, running stop signs, improper hand signals, jaywalking, drag racing, and night lighting violations. Unmarked cars may be used to enforce these safety rules.
Johnny Agnew a 35 year old Seminole ex convict faced extradition to Hobbs New Mexico after escaping custody twice while being taken from a state police car. Officers pursued him through a cornfield and recaptured him after a late night chase. He had been arrested at his mother's Seminole home and linked to a theft at a state line bar involving a tire tube and wheel stolen from a car. He previously served time at Huntsville Penitentiary Texas for related charges.
Rex Hartgraves of Lovington represented the southeast district and received a Sunshine State District award of 50 dollars at the 28th Annual State FFA Convention banquet in Albuquerque. The National FFA Foundation funded the award.
Police cited Lee A. Stewart aged 21 and Arthur Spillman aged 38 after a two car collision in Hobbs caused about 450 dollars in damage. Stewart’s 1955 Ford was stopped for a red light when Spillman’s 1951 Lincoln hit it from behind as Spillman fell asleep. Stewart lacked a driver license and Spillman also lacked one and disregarded others’ rights. Spillman’s car sustained 400 dollars damage and Stewart’s 50 dollars.
Three individuals were jailed Saturday night on prostitution related charges. Lorine Flentroy, 26, of 617 East White Street, Katherine Prinson, 29, of 519 East Byers, and Joaquin Marques, 29, of Seminole Texas, were arrested after Marques alleged a woman swindled him of twenty dollars during an illicit act. They await a Monday hearing.
Harold Kincaid, 23, of the Leverett Hotel in Hobbs, is held on $1000 bond for unlawfully touching a minor girl. Police say he mistreated a seven year old Hobbs girl Saturday evening and was arrested in Lovington Sunday on a warrant.
A Farmington fugitive, P. E. Redmond, 44, of Oklahoma, was arrested by Patrolmen Bob Barbaree and Roger Walker as he slept in a car on W. Avenue D at 1:30 a.m. He was charged on a warrant with breaking and entering.

Rev and Mrs C G Watt visit Rotan Texas for a revival event this week led by Reverend Watt bringing religious services to the community.
Patrolman A W Payne chased and captured R Henry Skiles after a high speed pursuit of over eight miles. Skiles, 23, confessed to 16 break ins in Texas and eight in Hobbs. A juvenile accomplice, E J Galindo, admitted aiding in Texas jobs. Local and county officers spread the case across Winkler, Midland, Odessa and other towns as extradition and sentencing plans unfolded.
A Hobbs vegetable stand owner reported four watermelons stolen after closing Saturday night. Three small boys were seen nearby, and he quipped boys will be boys as he blamed the trio for the loss. The case led to no charges.
A Black man, George Williams, jailed on a statutory rape charge involving a 12 year old girl, may be committed to a mental hospital after a sanity hearing arranged by the Lea County district attorney. He has a history of mental illness and past escapes from a Texas facility, with no trial date yet set.
Lea County Commissioners voted to hold a special meeting on August 13 to set a date for a bond election to finance courthouse expansion. They approved deposits totaling 4.0 million dollars across Lovington National Hobbs First National and Lea County State Bank and earmarked 114000 in federal funds for secondary roads. The Southeastern New Mexico Water and Sewage Association met at Roswell Country Club with Hobbs leader H M Cowboy Alexander presiding. Henry Gaines and Bill Harrison spoke on department relationships with water and sewage services and a roundtable followed. Attendees included Hobbs and Lovington officials. next meeting will be in Clovis on September 7.
Within 45 minutes on Monday Lovington saw two collisions totaling $625 in damage. The first at Main and Vernile involved Morton Texas resident Vernile Pierce, 75, and a Chrysler driven by Lovington resident Mrs Jessie Bishop, 21, with Pierce cited for improper left turn and Bishop for failure to yield. The second crash at First and B involved Willie G Pollack of Lovington in a 54 Olds and Jewel Henry in an east bound Chevy. Pollack cited for failure to grant right of way and both vehicles sustained $200 apiece in damage.
Judge John W. Green imposed fines on two reckless drivers. Roosevelt Brown paid 105 dollars in Justice of the Peace court with 5 dollars added costs, while T. E. Hunt faced city court penalties. J. R. Davis and J. W. Kendrick were fined 15 dollars each for speeding, and Leroy Butler paid 25 dollars after pleading guilty to drunkenness.
C O Shirey said a tarpaulin valued at 50 dollars was taken from a boat on Lovington Lake on Saturday between six and seven pm. Shirey lives at 814 West Avenue J in Lovington.
