Phantom Broadcast Triggers Algerian Fear of Revolt

Unfounded alarms spread after a phantom radio broadcast in Algiers. Right wing French extremists cut the Algiers station for 28 minutes and aired claims of a new uprising led by Paris revolt organizers. The march and OAS rhetoric sparked tension but authorities reported calm across Algeria.

Home Builders Meet in Hobbs Dinner

Parents Killed In North Carolina Crash

Mr and Mrs J A Robinson and their son Floyd Robinson died in an automobile crash outside Bryson City North Carolina while returning from Tennessee. Robinsons daughter Idell Hawks and two daughters are hospitalized with critical injuries. Granddaughter Ronnie Shannon survives. Floyd Robinson, injured with a broken arm, drove the car. The Wilson family learned of the tragedy while en route to Gastonia North Carolina to notify relatives.

Enrollment Begins on August 14 for Lovington Schools

Lovington school term enrollment for 1961 62 announced by Superintendent H C Parnell. Registration runs August 14 to August 18 with grades staggered by day. bus and transfer students register last. Zone enrollments specify Lea Parkview Yarbro elementary locations and junior high and high school sites.

Otto Named New Member by Highway Commission

The Republican majority of the New Mexico State Highway Commission selected Richard Otto of Albuquerque to succeed H. E. Leonard as highway commissioner. Democrat John Sudderth opposed, saying he was not consulted and did not know Otto. Sudderth proposed a list of 15 alternatives. The appointment becomes effective after bond and oath. Sudderth praised the other nominees as capable. The commission planned to defer punishment for contractors tied to a prior payoffs investigation.

Lovington’s Roaring Twenties Editor Luke Roberts Arrives

In 1924 Luke Roberts came to Lovington then a tiny Lea County town facing water woes and no railroad. He later became editor and civic leader as Lea County's oil boom began with the Mallamar and Inglefield wells. Roberts campaigned against liquor and helped push a railroad extension, while marrying Clara M. Roberts and guiding local coverage through the era.
