The district outlines enrollment by grade and day starting Monday August 19. Transfer students and beginners enroll Monday with seniors on Tuesday and moving through to Saturday for bus students. Pre School Workshop runs August 26 31 with classes starting September 3.
A lettuce packing plant for the Artesia Lovington area hinges on Gay Manufacturing Company securing 400 acres of lettuce. Growers must place $10,000 in escrow to cover processing costs, plus $25 per acre, which farmers deem high. Transport to Artesia would raise costs about 5 cents per carton. County agent James Gilstrap notes about 300 acres in Artesia and 86 in Lea County, with 400 acres needed to proceed. All lettuce should be planted by the 10th to fit favorable conditions.
The Lovington area recorded .31 inches of rainfall Saturday and Sunday. Showers began Saturday afternoon and were widespread, with Lea County receiving scattered showers across Sunday afternoon. Officials forecast more scattered showers in the coming days.
Arthur Gilbert Jr aged 16 escaped with slight injuries after colliding his scooter with a car driven by Mrs. George Mugishima on West Avenue J. Authorities say the accident happened as Mugishima turned into a private driveway. Gilbert's scooter sustained about 50 dollars in damages while police estimate 10 dollars for the car repairs.
U.S. Judge Waldo H. Rogers in Albuquerque questions whether the military must seize all of Otero County rancher John Prather's land for national defense. Prather, 82, fights to hold his 87,000 acres as a court order required eviction by last Thursday midnight for a guided-missile testing expansion.
Billy W. Marler, gunner's mate seaman USN, of Lovington, Illinois, returned to San Diego aboard USS Leroy Wilson after a six month Western Pacific cruise. The ship visited Auckland in January and conducted a six week patrol of the U.N. Trust Territory of the Pacific. In the Far East the crew docked in Hong Kong and ports in Japan, Kwajalein, Manus, Saipan, Tinian, Truk, Ponape, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, Midway, Guam and Hawaii.
A car was stolen Sunday afternoon in a continuing series of thefts. Police examine the scene and review nearby surveillance for possible suspects as investigations proceed.
Warden T M Woodruff predicts the eight million dollar New Mexico State Penitentiary will reach 1100 inmates by 1962, up from 804 today. He cites rising crime nationwide and population growth, warning expansion or a reform facility may be needed within five years to handle rehabilitable inmates.
Bruce D. Evans was named Soldier of the Month at Fort Richardson Alaska for his role as squad leader in Company K 2nd Infantry Division 23d Regiment. The 22-year-old from Hobbs attended ENMU and worked for Lester's Appliance before arriving in Alaska in September 1956 for duty.
A year has passed since Felix Montoya, 32, vice president of the Albuquerque First Thrift and Loan, vanished August 1 1956 on his way home. The following morning nearly 7500 dollars was missing from the safe. police suspected kidnapping or murder as leads faded. Anyone with information is urged to come forward.
Mrs. Myrna Lou Stiles 26 of 214 West Tyler died when the Plymouth she rode in overturned three times on a straight road near Ft. Stockton Texas Saturday morning. Driver Melvin Stiles was injured along with Linda Debra and Jim Stiles and Eddie Garber. others’ injuries described as slight. Milton Eisenhower to visit Mexico City for goodwill tour seven days.
Nine people died in a violent weekend on New Mexico highways lifting 1957 state traffic fatalities to 251, 25 more than last year at this time. Garland L Wooley 38 of Farmington died in a two car crash 30 miles west of Fort Sumner on US 60. Virginia May Bibber 34 of La Verne California died in a two vehicle crash on US 66 a mile west of Correro.
Seventeen Lea County Leaders travel to Las Cruces for state 4-H showings with seniors from Lovington McDonald and Praireview competing in home economics, crop and livestock judging, tractor driving and lawn care. Carlton Benham leads Jr. Leaders. Mrs. R. G. Patterson travels as 2023 J C Penny award winner.
Three storage dams on the upper Gallinas River near Las Vegas New Mexico failed early Monday flooding low areas. Evacuations reached twenty to twenty five families as guards aided rescue efforts. A 40 year old preacher Emil La Porte and his young daughter Laura died in the flood.
The administration lowered down payments and raised interest rates on government supported home loans. The FHA increased rates from five to 53 percent and reduced down payment requirements to a level described as minimal.
Hobbs defeated Ballinger 6 to 3 and Carlsbad beat Lamesa 4 to 3 as Hobbs closed to within three games of first place Westerners. Ballinger had 14 hits but only 3 runs, 13 runners left on base. Jim Moore hit a two run homer for Hobbs.
Lovington meets Tucumcari this afternoon for the district championship in Little League. A lefty starter is expected for Lovington with Robert Caudle as backup. Lovington beat Los Alamos 5-2 behind pitcher J Schetschuk who fanned 13 and allowed 3 hits.
Canon City police hold Earl Howard a 41 year old Torrance California man after a woman reports he fired at her door knob. Bullets traced to a California pistol test against slugs in the Hobbs El Seguido killings and other local shootings. A separate tip about a .22 rifle near Sitting Bull Falls proved false as the gun was gone.
President Eisenhower and other leaders mourn former Senator Walter George noting his death as a great loss to Georgia and the nation. Lodge to attend the funeral. Nixon, Dulles, Russell, and Talmadge also laud George's service and character.
FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover issued a fiscal year report stating the agency reached a 10 year record high in criminal convictions with more than 11,000 cases by the year ending June 30, despite a rising crime wave.
The Bureau of Land Management studies four bids to lease 1800 acres containing potassium near Carlsbad. Three bids from Duval Sulphur and Potash Houston National Potash New York and Southwest Potash New York carry no conditions. Potash Company of America Carlsbad offers straight bid alternate bid and extra cash premium. High bidder to be determined in 3 or 4 days.
A 10-year-old boy admitted shooting his 57-year-old father Ollie Aamodt to death near Brainerd Minnesota on July 27. Ira Aamodt confessed after initial denials from his brothers. The motive cited was abuse as the boys discussed killing their father.
The Osteopathic Hospital Association proposes leasing 50 beds at the Bernalillo County Indian Hospital to ease funds shortages caused by federal funding cuts. Medical officials oppose the plan as premature and may threaten accreditation and the hospital's intern training program. Board trustees say finances are not currently dire.
