Melvin Berry 38 a Roswell resident and worker at a service station and cotton oil mill was shot once in the left chest at his home about 2 am. His wife Almrethy 31 was taken into custody by police after she allegedly fled to a neighbor for help. No charges had been filed by early today.
About 300 New Mexico firefighters are expected at the 11th annual State Fire Marshal training school from August 22 to 25 at New Mexico State University. Deputy Chief Ray Kuhn of the Albuquerque Fire Department is named as a primary instructor and has seven years of instructor service and two years as assistant director of the program.

A 15 year old Lovington girl was arrested Thursday evening for driving while intoxicated and reckless driving after a motor bike overturned at Western Gulf Service Station drive Main and Ave D. Charges of reckless driving and no license were dropped with a $50 fine on the DWI. Aylmer A Nuttall of Hobbs was charged with three theft counts under 100 dollars and sentenced to six months in county jail on each count plus $400 fines. Mary Lee Williams Bell of Houston was arrested for perjury with bond set at $1,000 pending sentencing.
Former New Mexico development director Robert Hoffman told United Press International the 7500 paid to operators of the 1964 World’s Fair pavilion covered advertising exhibit space and that no operating expenses were paid by the department. The funds appeared on two vouchers from the Department of Development to the New Mexico Development Corporation, of which Hoffman was president.
The NM Highway Commission will open bids August 26 for 2.69 million dollars in road work across New Mexico led by a 1 million dollar 5.6 mile US 70 project from Tularosa toward Alamogordo in Otero County. Additional bids include a 960 thousand dollar US 82 stretch in Otero County, I 25 work in Bernalillo County, and more along State Road 63 and Eagle Draw. NMJC will function as an extension center for senior colleges and universities offering upper division and graduate work, with courses delivered by partner institutions and taught by their staff. Tuition mirrors the senior college rate, and evening classes will be integrated with NMJC’s programs under Director Charles Boyd.
