Vice President Richard M. Nixon concluded a two week tour of the Communist bloc with a thunderous send off from thousands of cheering Poles. Flowers showered him as he prepared to fly home, marking a historic visit.
State Department experts warned that the Eisenhower Khrushchev talks should not be expected to yield rapid solutions to East West problems. They caution the meeting may improve climate for talks but not end the Cold War. Khrushchev's visit schedule includes Washington New York Chicago and San Francisco with plant tours urged. Nixon departs for Europe on a four hour flight to Keflavik Iceland and to Washington, D C, after a welcoming reception in Poland and Russia.
District Judge John R. Brand presided Tuesday over six cases with three not guilty pleas and two guilty pleas plus a remand to juvenile court. Umfra D. Driver pleaded guilty to forgery with Harvey Markley appointed as attorney. Joel Burch Gay, age 17, remanded to juvenile court for breaking and entering. Josie Lee Scott pleaded guilty to breaking and entering with sentence deferred. Bryan D. Moore and Clarence B. Wright pleaded not guilty to non-support. Rural Nelson pleaded guilty to grand larceny with sentencing deferred pending related case disposition.
Tatum Golden Jubilee kicks off Thursday with Old-fashioned Bargains and a 2 pm Future Farmers of America rodeo. A historical pageant Saddles to Satellites stars 250 locals opens Monday and runs nightly through Friday ending with a fireworks display. Governor Burroughs and other officials join the coronation ball Saturday while Miss Bobbie Jean Maples leads queen contest votes.
City police investigate a theft at the residence of D. W. Green. A tray on the refrigerator held diamond rings valued at 175 dollars along with a five dollar bill and four books of trading stamps. Entry time between 7 and 9 p.m. with the house unlocked. No witnesses.
Tokyo reports medical experts question if Hiroyoshi Nagano’s death is linked to H bomb fallout. Coast guard ship Takuyo tested after last August radioactivity exposure showed no dangerous radiation. Nagano’s cremation precedes autopsy while crew of Takuyo remains asymptomatic.
Rex Hartgraves a 1957 Lovington High School graduate and NMU animal husbandry major is among three U.S. college students chosen for a summer program by the Nations Livestock and Meat Board. In Chicago with his wife he works with livestock growers feeders marketing agencies meat packers and retailers gaining mass media experience. He plans to return to the state university in September.
Lovington Chamber of Commerce directors discuss the Sept 17 Fair parade theme Space Age and Rodeo Grounds location postponement until after the Fair. The rodeo will be held at the old site during the Fair, with Buddy Fort leading arena plans and John Connell guiding Lovington Industries decisions.
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev said he would visit the United States next month as a peaceful man to talk peace without saber rattling. He urged a common language and understanding to resolve Berlin and other issues, noting no rocket bases would be shown and no summit agenda set for unofficial talks.
The House Judiciary committee voted 17 to 13 to pass a five point civil rights bill. The panel rejected a provision that would have provided federal aid to desegregate schools.
Secretary of State Christian Herter warned the Soviets that the Western Allies are in Berlin by right of victory in war and have no intention of signing away those rights. He spoke at the closing session of the Big Four ministers conference.
Santa Fe revenue commissioner, following Burroughs Democrats, lashed back at Dennis Chavez Jr who yesterday criticized the governor. Chavez urged closer scrutiny of Denny Junio.
