Winton L. Smith of Norman Oklahoma is hired as an electronics drafting instructor at New Mexico Junior College. He holds a BS and Master’s from the University of Oklahoma, spent six years at Western Electric, attended Navy Electricians’ School at Great Lakes, and five years at General Electric. He is married with five children and will move to Hobbs in late August.
Federal spending in New Mexico for fiscal 1967 is projected to surpass 1 billion dollars with the Atomic Energy Commission and Defense Department as top contributors. AEC totals ~412.5 million, DOD includes Army and Air Force outlays, Health Education and Welfare boosts school construction and loans, Interior and OEO combining 88 million, plus more in Commerce Agriculture and other agencies.
Frank Louis Simmons, 17, of 612 East Snyder Hobbs pled guilty as an accessory to theft and Bone Wayne Simmons, 16, pled to related charges, both sent to Springer. Lish Wilderson, 21, Hobbs, charged as a party to a crime and burglary attempt, held for sentencing. Tilford Dale Pritchard, 42, Lovington, arrested for burglary, pled guilty and received four year deferred sentence. Fermin Padilla arraigned on aggravated battery, pled not guilty, out on 1500 dollars bail.
Christi Brooks daughter of Mr and Mrs Davi Brooks of 906 West Avenue M Lovington has entered the 1966 New Mexico State Our Little Miss Pageant in the La Petite division. United Press International reports the 1966 primary season reaches its halfway mark as four states hold elections. Michigan and Idaho test Democratic hopes for Senate seats while Republicans see contests in Kansas and Missouri.
Lawrence D. Rice a Lovington native and University of Southwestern Louisiana professor was in the University of Texas library during the Monday shooting but survived. His relatives waited for word as the campus reeled in a battlefield like scene with warnings to shelter and minutes mattered for safety.

At 12 44 p m Saturday a two vehicle crash at Main and Central involved a 1960 Ford Station wagon owned by Ruben Stroh driven by 17 year old Thomas James Stroh and a 1954 Chevrolet owned by Osborne Fisher driven by 17 year old Gary Lynn Fisher. Damages were 50 dollars to the Ford and 100 dollars to the Chevrolet. The Chevrolet changed lanes and struck the Ford’s right front. One occupant in the Ford Doe McGuire 17 of 505 McKee Gallup reported no injuries. Gary Lynn Fisher was cited for failure to yield right of way.
Police received a 6 20 a m call about a break in at Snyder Mud Company located at 124 South Main. A rock was thrown through a south door window but entry was not gained and only glass was damaged. Investigation continues.
The Lea County Board of Commissioners met in regular session and approved a 3358.80 bid from Tom Morris Refueler Service of Odessa for converting a storage tank at Hobbs airport into a jet fuel container. The contract allows an 800 deduction if a water filter is supplied by Phillips Oil Company. Also discussed were runway deterioration and upcoming Turbo-jet service to Hobbs plus road projects in Tatum Jal and Lovingdon.
