The Loving ton city notes a second well abandoned in a month due to a sand slip. A nearby well, within ten feet, failed because a crooked hole could not be utilized. Both wells, south of town in the Denco addition, promised good production before loss.
The Air Force studies the practicality of three newly authorized Strategic Air Command dispersal bases including Hobbs New Mexico Dublin Georgia and Mitchell South Dakota. A survey team will visit Dublin and the other sites to determine feasibility for dispersing the B 52 fleet and report to Congress next year.
School superintendent H. C. Pannell and district officers joined a statewide cooperative program in educational administration in Santa Fe. The sessions focused on evaluating school programs with Texas and New Mexico educators framing discussions on how to assess and rate educational work for schools in their states.
Governor John Simms appoints Joseph Bursey as top aide replacing Richard Everett. Bursey, previously Tourism Director, declares the post permanent and expects no replacement after the November election. Zimmerman succeeds Bursey as director of the Tourist Bureau.
Albuquerque attorney Edward Parham files a $60,000 lawsuit against Sandoval County Sheriff Dick Montoya alleging arrest in Bernalillo on July 24 occurred while Montoya was intoxicated and without charges bail or communication. Parham says he suffered physical and mental distress humiliation and public disgrace after a 10 hour jail stay before habeas corpus release.
Governor John F. Simms, speaking from Silver City, predicts a November victory for Adlai Stevenson after Estes Kefauver withdraws from the presidential race. Simms calls Kefauver’s exit virtually certain Stevenson will be the Democratic nominee and believes a Democratic win in November is probable. He says he is convinced Stevenson will be the next President of the United States.
Ankara reports grave disorders in Bulgaria with curfews in three cities. A West Berlin refugee group says Polish Communists ordered a purge of their youth. Warsaw sources say the Polish Communist Party will divorce from the government Tuesday. Hungary vows better living standards and more liberty after party boss’s ousting.
State Police pursued two auto thieves, a 15 year old and an 18 year old from Albuquerque, after a pawnshop burglary in Santa Fe. The suspects led officers from Santa Fe to Albuquerque, halted at two roadblocks, and surrendered after admitting theft of a watch and two cars.
A 17 year old Tulsa youth named John Charles Charles Jr. told authorities he was abducted in Albuquerque by two men. He said they held him in his father's car, drove to Topeka to buy a bus ticket to Tulsa, called his mother, and were not harmed though a small amount of money was taken. FBI in Kansas City limited details.
July filings in district court include Ray Haynes Hobbs School teacher suing B J Service for 12500 due to a May 3 Hobbs collision. U S Fidelity and Guaranty Co seeks 237.27 for auto damages from a May 17 1955 accident. Multiple divorce and debt actions listed with various plaintiffs and defendants.
Lea County money from the ACP allotment nearly exhausted this year leaving farmers short for irrigation and permanent improvements. Lee Berryhill requests Albuquerque ACP offices to allot $10,000 immediately to Lea County farmers. The program covers 50 percent of costs for cement pipe and concrete lined ditches up to $1,500 per year per farmer.
Architectural Record names the Carson Pirie Scott department store in Chicago and the Wainwright Building in St. Louis as the era’s most significant structures. Louis Sullivan designed the Chicago store before 1900 and Hugh Morrison calls it a century defining masterpiece that captures 20th century mood and tempo.
A petition will be presented to the Lea County Commission to call a bond election for a new courthouse and jail in Lovington. The $1.2 million bond seeks to integrate the present courthouse with a new building while removing the old jail if approved. The Lea County Bar Association and Lea County Officers sponsor the petition, signed by over 200 voters.

Two men sought by Odessa police on burglary charges were arrested in Hobbs at 12 10 p m after a Lovington resident reported seeing them near a local motor court and walking along Avenue D near Love Street about 11 a m. The suspects are named Jake Nix and Marion E Murphy.
In a Prohibition era style raid on Chicago's west side, officers surrounded the area with tommy guns and flashlights. They apprehended 28 year old Lawrence Neumann, wanted for the June 8 killings of a dice girl a news vendor and the owner’s brother at a north side jazz spot. He surrendered after a brief standoff following the sighting by two detectives.
Applications for the 1956 soil bank were closed at midnight Tuesday. In this area 32 cotton and 1 wheat farmer signed up, totaling 618.72 acres reduced in cotton and 483.6 acres in wheat. Cotton growers receive 33575.16 dollars total, about 1049.23 per person. wheat farmers 2254.40 dollars. No peanut farms listed. Remaining contracts must be completed by 3 August to qualify this year. A tenant example shows contracts require landowner and applicant signatures by 5 p.m. 3 August.
Prince Rainier announces in a radio broadcast that Princess Grace Kelly is expecting a child in February. The couple, married in April 1956, bring happiness to Monaco and an heir would mean continued freedom from French taxes and military service.
State patrolman A W Payne reported two vehicles on Highway 83, 13 miles west of town, involved in a morning crash. W H Sharpe 36 Hagerman drove the truck into Haliburton owned car operated by Gordon D Smith Lovington causing 600 dollars damage to the Halliburton vehicle and 300 to the truck. Charges for failing to yield right of way following too closely and cutting into traffic were filed against Sharpe.
Lovington police quarters hold a bicycle found weeks ago after a filing station operator reported it abandoned for five to six weeks. Police Captain Pat Wilson said the owner, a young boy missing the bike for seven or eight weeks, can claim it by identifying the wheel.
M C Newsome of Artesia, about 65, was found dead in a Harvey Taylor ranch building near Mallamar by Ralph Baker and Buck Herring while seeking drilling site directions. An inquest by Judge J W Green ruled natural causes. he was last seen Sunday visiting family in Artesia. Survived by widow and two sons Virgil and Junior of Artesia.
Secretary of State Dulles arrived in London to head the American delegation to the three power Suez talks. He postponed the first briefing with French and British officials until Wednesday. The United States carries President Eisenhower’s directive for swift action, while Britain girds for a major military buildup and possible unilateral moves to secure the canal.
Police from Seminole and Lovington blocked all roads Tuesday to stop three suspects who were firing on traffic. The pursuit began after a noon call that the men left Denver City around 11 45 a.m. and were heading toward New Mexico. The search lasted about an hour with no arrests and the motorists were told the roadblock was lifted with no leads on the suspects.
