Santa Fe police say John Cordova will be arrested for mayhem after hospital treatment for himself and his wife following an acid spray incident Thursday night. The wife suffers serious burns and two children sustained minor injuries while attempting to intervene outside St. Vincent Hospital.
Political observers warned Argentina’s June 23 presidential vote could be postponed amid intramilitary turmoil. The Navy revolt failed to install a new dictatorship but sharpened Peronist versus anti-Peronist tensions as Guido weighs a possible postponement and the army and air force maintain control.
Lovington police faced a puzzled decision after two parked and driverless cars collided on W Central Ave near the post office. Mrs June Selman’s 1959 Ford rolled from a parked space striking Mrs T J Grider’s 1958 Ford causing about $15 in damage with no citation issued.
State police said they are searching for Johnny Bob Harrell who vanished while headed for New Mexico. Harrell described as wealthy and associated with an anticommunist religious sect.
A 26 year old Mallamar woman was returned from Texas to Lea County to face charges of passing worthless checks. She was arraigned before Justice of Peace Reese Greaves with bond set at $500.
Cindy Howard has been named Top Speller for the second straight year and will represent Lovington at the District Spelling Bee in El Paso Texas May 8 and 9. The district winner goes to the National Contest in Washington DC in June. The Lovington group of top spellers includes students from elementary and language arts sections, with Cindy finishing first among finalists Thursday morning. The Elza Howerd family has a history of top spellers including Cindy’s siblings Joel Elyce and Mark.
Reno police questioned the former husband Jeffrey Schmidt and other acquaintances of Sonja McCaskie as they probe the brutal murder of the 24 year old Scottish emigrant. Her dismembered body was found in a cedar chest with knives in the torso, her head beneath the body, and her heart on the floor near the door.
A Hobbs kick-off dinner launched the Lea County cancer crusade for April fund raising. Jerry Kenn of Albuquerque urged volunteers for a multi million dollar program while Bob Moates outlined projects to reach a 3 235 22 county goal.
Lovington Schools released the third nine weeks honor roll listing 170 students. The report names seniors through grade seven with multiple students per grade earning A minus or better.
