Village to Benefit From $82500 Housing Grant

Pyramid Village will receive $82,500 for modernization of its 100 low income units. Senator Pete V Domenici announced the HUD grant as part of $6.5 million for 23 New Mexico communities. The funding covers physical and management improvements and requires 20 years of lower income housing operation. Lordsburg is noted for its 100 units.

Lois Saucedo Named Bingaman Hidalgo Campaign Coordinator

Lordsburg Center Set to Open October 24

Mayor Clark Smith says the Lordsburg Special Events Center will open October 24 with Four Square Construction as the primary contractor after city approvals on September 27. Brunswick Company installed six bowling lanes and will train staff with city officials before opening. the center will offer 30 bowling balls and 34 shoes.

Edward Barrio Dies in Las Cruces at 58

Edward Gomez Barrio 58 a former Playas resident died Sunday at Memorial General Hospital Las Cruces. Visitation Tuesday 2 p.m. at Baca's Heather Funeral Chapel rosary 7 30 p.m. at St Josephs Church. Funeral Mass Wednesday 10 a.m. at St Josephs with Fr Narciso Rivera. Interment Shakespeare Cemetery Lordsburg. Barrio born August 10 1930 lived in Las Cruces 6 months previously in Playas since 1979. He worked for Phelps Dodge Corp at the power plant as a mechanic and was a U S Army veteran member of Our Lady of Purification Catholic Church and D A V Las Cruces. Survivors include wife Refugia two sons Edward V Barrio Jr Ricky V Barrio daughter Theresa V Barrio brother Eugene Barrio Jr sister Clara Diaz and two grandchildren. Funeral chapels in charge of arrangements.

Enrollment Increases At WNMU Fall Semester

Western New Mexico University President Rudolph Gomez reports Fall Semester enrollment up 14.09 percent from 1987. This year 1709 students attend, up from 1498 last year, with FTE rising 7.98 percent. Housing Director Michael Black notes campus residents up 13 percent in Eckles Hall and 24 percent in Ritch Hall, with married housing near capacity.

Paving To Begin At Center With Two Projects

Mayor Smith held a pre construction meeting with City Engineer and Southwest Transit Mix to discuss paving the Special Events Center parking lot. Crews will lay a ten inch water line along North Street while a second crew overlays North Street from A Street to near D Street and constructs from D Street to Hidalgo Auto Salvage. An overlay is planned for Gold Street with completion set for November 1.

CPA Firm Finishes Reconstruction Work

Las Cruces firm Ewing and Willman CPAs completed reconstructing the city’s books under an emergency measure approved by the State Department of Finance. The fourth quarter filing was extended to September 23 and the audit report is due November 30 in Santa Fe. The project cost $35 per hour for Lisa Willman and $28 per hour for other staff.

Hazardous Analysis Course in Playas Area

Two 16 hour Hazardous Materials Incident Analysis courses will be offered for fire, police, and EMS personnel as part of the New Mexico Fire Marshal’s training. Sessions at Hidalgo Smelter October 4–5 7:00 am to 3:00 pm and at Playas fire station October 21 24 28 and November 1 1988 6:00 to 10:00 pm. Contact John McCarty at 436-2211 or 436-2766 evenings.

Lordsburg Board Sets October Meeting Time and Location

The Lordsburg Board of Education schedules a regular meeting for Tuesday October 4 at 7 00 p m in the Board Room at 501 West Fourth Street Lordsburg. The City Clerk notes the assistants hours and per diem for a project lasting about 10 days with some days at 16 hours. The same firm will handle the City audit with cost adjustments for overlapping tasks. The City Clerk says the City of Lordsburg is in very stable financial shape.

City Corner notes Lordsburg building inspector plan

On September 27 1988 I spoke with James Harris a Deming retiree who led the city for nearly 30 years and now works part time as Lordsburg building inspector. He and Larry Underwood are asked to bid as Lordsburg inspectors to update zoning rules and enforce building regs for future growth. The Lordsburg Gem and Mineral Society will present a program at the National Guard Armory in October.
