The Hidalgo County Hospital board learned of an $18 000 discrepancy in the books after a recent audit by Elmer Fox Accountants of El Paso. The audit prompted calls to strengthen bookkeeping and to report findings to the State Auditor's Office.
County officials report William J. Upton, a two term incum bent, resigns from his bid due to illness following recent surgery in El Paso. The 72 year old is said to be in fair condition as Hidalgo and counties react to the fiscal shock and leadership vacancy.
A House of Jesus Christ in Lordsburg will hold a meeting Saturday at 7 p.m. The gathering invites all faiths, with a message that everyone is welcome to participate. In other notes, Deming candidates for state office are discussed as the November election approaches.
Lordsburg city council discussed the new municipal sewerage plant and allowed two thirds of reclaimed water to go to the E.J. Wood Estate. Fred Ewing urged continued access for farming use, citing the 1922 easement document. Mayor Ted White noted the long collaboration and the decision was put to a vote.
Republican candidate Von Rue Crawford campaigned through Deming Lordsburg Virden and Animas last Tuesday and spoke to the Lordsburg Lions Club about airport development. He said airports aid industrial progress emergency services and modern travel access for the community.
Hidalgo County Sheriff Gene Moore reports three vehicles recovered with help from New Mexico State Police. A Mark IV was among the stolen vehicles. Suspects were detained after using a stolen credit card at a local station. attendant detects it in a routine check.
