New Jail Facility Vitally Needed Here
Hidalgo County records show average daily prisoners at 17 in a jail designed for eight. At one point in August 51 inmates were confined. A new facility would house 65 with proper segregation and house women and juveniles locally. The plan combines sheriff, magistrate, and court functions, freeing space by reusing the library building. Bond issue of 225000 to be voted October 7 funds the jail. any excess covers courthouse repairs and rewiring, with no tax increase due to retirement of the hospital bond.

Animas Fire Weather Station Closure Noted
The Bureau of Land Management closes the fire weather station eleven miles south of Animas after rain and cooler weather. Mrs. Billie Dunagan operated the station for six years, recording and sending daily data to the Las Cruces office and Weather Bureau analysis. J. W. Young commended Dunagan for excellent work.

Low Bidder Named for Fence Contract in New Mexico
Las Cruces BLM District Manager J W Young announces Donald Patton of Denver Colorado as the low bidder for a fence construction contract. Fifteen miles of fence will be built on the John Muir Allotment near Lordsburg and the Clem Donaldson Allotment near Hachita as part of range improvement projects.

Mayor Alan Koff announced Lordsburg has earned a new grant of 118,890 from the U S Interior Federal Water Pollution Control Administration under Public Law 660. The project is designated W PC NM 155. Total federal grants to the city, including housing aid, now approach 2 million dollars after two years of efforts.
