Lordsburg Checks Tourists Highlight Record Traffic

Eighteen members of three South Troops assisted by District Commissioner Omer Mas and Scout Masters Bennie B H Moffett and Sal Salinas report a twelve hour tourist car and truck check on Saturday Sept 20. More out of state cars and trucks were processed than in any prior hour, with 787 passenger cars and 71 trucks or buses entering the city. 164 New Mexico licenses were counted. The effort involved three highways in three four hour shifts and drew praise for its impact on Lordsburg tourism revenue.

Hidalgo Garage Sells. Kerr and Powell Take Ownership

Methodist Church Services and Upcoming Meetings

Rev Joe Emanuel and Pastor v Krewson lead worship at Methodist Church Fifth and Pyramid Streets with Sunday school at 9 45 or 10 00 a m and morning service at 11. A people's meeting at 7 p m features "No More Sea" followed by services at 8 p m. Plans are underway for an evangelistic meeting beginning October 8.

Mrs Ruth Wood spent Tuesday in Paso. The God Church led by Pastor Hines invites worshipers to morning and evening services. Service times include 9:45 a.m. Sunday school 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Thursday service at six blocks south of the hotel.

Lions Club meeting notes honor ten year members

Lion Secretary Scofield outlined club service goals and received applause at the Lions Club Tuesday noon. Ten-year gold chevrons were presented to Nat Gammon George P. Jeffus Willard E. Holt and another will be given to H. H. Conder later. Holt reported a Lordsburg blackout praise letter to Air Warden Claude Sanders and noted Lordsburg airport acreage drawing government interest. He also highlighted Boy Scouts tourist checkup on September 20.

Land Office veteran C R Wilkerson retires after forty years

C R Wilkerson, a forty year veteran of the United States Land Office now in Las Cruces for twelve years, visited Lordsburg on Friday and praised local prosperity. He will retire in November upon reaching the age limit and commended Registrar Paul A Roach and the entire office staff for their work.

Heavy Rain At NM Cattle Ranch Sets Record Evening

Tom Clayton president of the New Mexico Cattle Growers Association reports a Sunday rain at his Separ area ranch totaling 3 inches in 3 hours one of the heaviest on record for the region. The downpour also drenched adjoining countryside impacting grazing areas and local farms.

Springerville Arizona high school superintendent R B Sundgren and wife and daughter Dorothy visited Lordsburg friends on Saturday. Sundgren recently took the Springerville post after two years leading the Gold Road school and expresses happiness with the promotion. Lordsburg residents hold the Sundgrens in warm regard.

Airport Improvement Under Consideration by Chamber

For months the Chamber of Commerce has prepared maps for War Department branches, congressional delegation members, and state officers including the state airport coordinator. Robert M. Reynolds certified ownership for lands adjoining the airport, securing options to purchase or lease to total 1120 acres. The Los Angeles War Department engineer praised progress, hinting that papers have advanced and a decision may come soon.

Lordsburg Mohair Clip Sold to Boston Firm

The Lordsburg mohair clip of 50 000 to 60 000 pounds sold through Joe Wood and Robert Reed for the Boston firm of Wm 8S. Febiger Company. Kid hair brought 73 4 5c and peat hair 55c, about $30 000. The Animas clip of 20 000 lbs was bought by Milton Cohen for a Boston firm. Kid hair 74 3 4c and goat hair 54c, nearly $20 000 to Animas growers.

Red Cross Representative Plans November Roll Call

Red Cross special representative T. G. Albee has been in Lordsburg to organize the annual roll call with a quota of 750 members, more than double last year. He will then travel to Silver City to conduct an instructor course for First Aid.

Sims' Remains Sent to Chattanooga for Burial

The remains of T. F. Sims, critically injured in an auto wreck, died at DeMoss Hospital and were shipped to Chattanooga Tennessee for burial. Mrs. Sims accompanied the shipment. Heather Mortuary handled arrangements for the prominent Tennessee manufacturer who received many messages from his home city while hospitalized.

Defense contract man tours Lordsburg shops for war gear prep

L A Wilkie from the office of Production Management El Paso visited Lordsburg last week to assess local machine shops capable of producing war equipment in small lots. He identified several shops that could be mobilized if production needs rise.

Captain Jayme DeAzelfedo, a prominent Pan-American Airways official in Panama, is hospitalized in Lordsburg with a severe scalp wound after his new car wreck near the way to Tucson. The vehicle suffered major damage.

Huntsman and associates kill two bears at Mimbres River

B B Ware and two companions killed a brown bear about 500 pounds and a black bear about 350 pounds at the head of the Mimbres river in the Black Range. They planned to eat the bears and give portions away. Ware shot the brown bear three times before it died and recovered twelve pounds of lard from the carcasses.

Brief Court Session Sees Larceny Plea In Mining Case

Judge A W Marshall traveled from Deming for a short session dominated by a mining case. Ramon Oranta pleaded guilty to larceny with L P McHalffey and Joseph B Woodbury of Silver City representing the litigants. Attending were District Attorney Hodges and Court Reporter Mrs Mary Steinberger. Miss Mary Gibbs of San Francisco arrived in Lordsburg and, with Miss Gertrude Bell, Mr Valerie Barker and Mrs Lee Herdman, dined with Mrs J R Poindexter before heading to Silver City. Mr and Mrs Claude Sanders traveled to Albuquerque for the Fair and races. Sanders has a colt running there this week.

Animal school lunch project feeds seventy five in hall

The Animal school launched a new lunch program with government food and WPA workers. Tables were set in the study hall and teachers and pupils shared a plate lunch for seventy five, with a two day menu featuring creamed vegetable casserole and frijoles, bread, dairy, and fruit.

Flood Does Much Damage At Muir Ranch In Burro Mountains

The worst flood in local memory struck the Muir ranch Sunday afternoon likely from a Burro mountains cloud burst. Water rose over twelve inches in the ranch house, damaged adobe buildings, tore fences, and sent residents fleeing. By 9 30 p m the water receded though travel to town was delayed until Monday morning. Rex Kipp helped repair the damage after bringing the family to town.
