North Park upgrade approved by Lordsburg council

Lordsburg residents won approval for a 16130 project to upgrade North Park funding from lodgers tax while BOR funds remain unavailable. The council also split the animal control officer from the police department and asked for city priority lists, with a golf course joint powers agreement reviewed for a lease south of the city.

Edington Released on $25,000 Bond in Rodeo Slaying Case

Edington of Rodeo is released from Hidalgo County Jail on a $25,000 bond. He faces charges for the May 4, 1974 slaying of Rodeo resident Domingo Alvarez. Bond was set by Sixth Judicial District Judge Norman Hodges. trial date not yet set.

Animas Public School Meets Three Community Meetings

Animas School District schedules three public meetings to discuss school programs and goals. Parents and citizens may speak with school personnel at Rodeo Catholic Hall September 28, Playas Community Center October 5, and Animas School Library October 12, all in the evening. Attendees will complete a questionnaire on topics from homework to graduation requirements and math and reading programs.

Lordsburg Community College Program Closed

Lordsburg officials and Petra Estrada report WNMU Dean Gilbert Calkins cancelled Lordsburg Community College for one semester due to just five registrations. Estrada says pre enrollment and money were ready. Calkins cites low registration as the reason. Negotiations aim to restart in January with a new director.

Smoking Rates Fall in Hidalgo County

Government survey shows overall decline in adult smoking. 39.3 percent of males over 21 smoke now, down from 42.2 percent in 1970, while 28.9 percent of females over 21 smoke, down from 30.5 percent.

Democrats Set Meeting and Grant Award Update

A Democratic meeting is scheduled for Monday September 27 at 7 00 p m in the Hidalgo County Court House to organize plans for a Democratic headquarters and the general election. Senator Pete Domenici announced a $45000 grant from the Economic Development Administration to the Southwestern New Mexico Council of Governments in Silver City. The council will contribute $15000 toward the $60000 total program cost to fund area jobs.

Jet Crash Investigated Near Hatchita In New Mexico

Davis Monthan air base officials probe a September 18 crash in Big Brushy Canyon Hidalgo County near Hatchita. Lt. Robert Mendoza Rivera, a Spaniard, died on site. the single occupant was found in the burned aircraft. Local and state officers assisted with wreckage removal by two Davis Monthan helicopters.
