Linda Schulz reports residents face higher gross receipts taxes as the state takes 1/8 of 1.35 percent allotted to cities with possible further 1/16 percent increases by ordinance after property tax hikes. First rise could take effect January 1, 1992 per City Finance Officer Ted Castillo. Second increment contingent on millage actions not in place July 1, 1991.
Senator John Smith told Liberal officials on Tuesday he will continue to represent Hidalgo County in Santa Fe. He noted a precinct loss in Sierra County and gains in Las Cruces as reapportionment debates proceed. Court clearance expected within 60 days, with Smith confident most decisions will stand.

City planning to impose a Municipal Infrastructure Gross Receipts Tax with a 1/8 percent increment, potentially raising about $26,688 from last year. Statewide 5 percent gross receipts tax applies to public facilities and utilities, with schools absorbing a 6 percent increase on open athletic events. city will collect 5 percent on city sponsored activities.
Sheriff Bob Hall announces a new contract with the U S Marshals to house non violent federal prisoners in Hidalgo County facilities. The deal raises daily pay from 40 to 44 dollars with twice weekly transport to Las Cruces. Estimated yearly revenue totals 208 780 dollars, funding the county general fund and potentially easing tax pressures.
The 70/60 Corridor Association will meet at Best Western American Motor Inn on Wednesday Sept 25 at 1130 in the Amigo Room. Everyone interested in attending is welcome. The corridor aids tourism from Apache Junction to Lordsburg per Lordsburg representative Pansy McDonald.
LHS invites alumni to attend the homecoming game Friday night in a letterman jacket to gain admission at the student price of two dollars. Alumni wearing athletic academic or band jackets will be admitted for 2.00.
Hidalgo County Commissioners appointed a beautification committee to finish plans for Courthouse Park. Six Victorian lamps will line the park with four in front of the courthouse and two before the library. A Prisoner of War Camp eagle will be placed at the park pending a state grant.
Thomas Butler, 48, arrested in Lordsburg by Officer David Waites after abducting an 8 year old Tucson boy in July 1990. He kidnapped the boy, drove to Lordsburg, and was found by motel staff when the boy escaped. Butler, who is said to be dying from lung cancer, received life plus 55 years for kidnapping and sexual molestation.
A citizen letter thanks officials for addressing scavenging by City Employees. State law prohibits scavenging at landfills or dumpsters. residents urged to report any sightings to City Hall or Lordsburg Police. Violators face fines.
