The First National Bank reopened in its new marble and mahogany equipped building after remodeling. The Spanish style structure features marble interiors and modern fixtures, offering banking facilities comparable to larger cities. Bank officials invite the public to visit and enjoy the improved quarters.
Gladys O Donnell the renowned aviatrix arrives in Lordsburg with husband Lloyd O Donnell and mechanic Clyde Downen after flying from St Louis via Wichita and Amarillo. She wins a cross country prize and receives Army Navy escort in California return.
H W Conder watchmaker and jeweler rents the west half of the ground lobby at Hollen Hotel and will create a showroom. He bought display cases and a large jewelry line including watches diamonds silverware and novelties. He has the local sales agency for several national brands and aims to open within a week or a few days.
Thirty five tickets were handed out Saturday to motorists who ignored traffic regulations. Fines, mostly for speeding and running stop signals, were paid into the police court. Police warn that continued violations will lead to fines and possible court action.
Walter Sullivan completes a room near the Border Land Garage to open a small cafe and June room. He is an experienced cafe man widely liked and expected to succeed after rebuilding following the Union Cafe fire months ago.
Jon D. Johnson of Tucson Arizona purchased the Manhattan Cafe taking charge late Saturday afternoon. He plans a complete renewal of fixtures and promises one of the best equipped cafes in the region, aiming to make it a popular city spot.
Ibia executive board in Deming approves site development on upper Mimbres near Cooney place for a permanent council camp. Attendees from Silver City Lordsburg Fort Bayard and others report on training finances transportation and membership efforts to strengthen Boy Scout programs across the area.
The report outlines adult registration changes requiring a one dollar fee with certificates, and calls for executive board mailing of a Monthly Itinerary. It recommends stronger council finances through publicity and campaigns, plus a nominating and program committee for January’s annual meeting. A bonded council treasurer is suggested and a Merit Badge Club forms at Deming High School.
A plan aims to organize the club in all area high schools. Officials oversee distribution and student participation to establish a regional network.
A. Y. Broun reports striking a good water flow at 100 feet from a well drilled at the corner of Bixth and Pyramid Streets. He plans to drill a few feet deeper to secure a larger reservoir. Broun, a professional water-well driller, notes previous south city attempts were less fruitful.
The PON test drilling around eleven miles west of the city reached 674 feet with a stable hole and six inch casing in place to prevent cave-in. New equipment adds 1500 feet bailer line and 2000 feet drilling line to continue operations as needed.
The high school fills the week with activities from football scrimmages with Lorisburg to Troop 2 meetings and Beginners Band practices. Home Economics students preserve produce while PT A and Boy Scout groups plan a hike and organize events. Enrollment stands at 178, with band instrument purchases offered to parents at school discounts or installment options.
Delegates from Lorda burg will join the state meeting of Knights of Pythias and Pythian Sisters in Albuquerque. Mr and Mrs H Bb Ownby return from Hueton Texas with others including Mr and Mrs Farle Kerr and Mrs Claude Fuller. Mrs Ownby represents Western Star Temple No. 11. Kerr and Boundey are local delegates. grand lodge sessions start September 25 in Albuquerque.
The Parent Teachers association held the first meeting of the new school year at the high school with a reception for new faculty and pupils. A brief business session approved a committee to draft peace resolutions after the president’s death and to fill vacancies at the October meeting. Readings, music, and a dance followed, with refreshments served by the organizing committee and domestic science students.
A city council ordinance requires all auto drivers to hold a city license with a base fee and an issuance charge. The ordinance becomes effective October 16.
J Kelly and Mia Kelly with daughters Ann and Laura Lucille drove from Deming in their new Willie Knight to greet Miss Mary Elizabeth Kelly at Holt High School. Slow drive at about 2 mph to warm up the model.
Nev W. W. Wilkerson presided at the Lordaburg Variety Bloze wedding ceremony. Hay M. Hariley wed Clara Brown with witnesses Frank Camp of Phoenix. James Day tied the knot with Kathryn Murdock of Phoenix witnessed by Mrs. W. TL and H. A. Casper of Lordsburg.
Mr and Mrs Tamena son of Ft Myers report during a six month U S motor trip that a small Florida area is infested or exposed to fruit fly and that authorities have placed a quarantine on moving fruit from new infestation zones. The Florida delegation claims the facts show limited spread and ongoing safeguards.
H H Conder spent the week end visiting friends in El Paso, enjoying leisure time and local hospitality during the outing.
