Hidalgo County commissioners approved the surveyor and engineering report on Playas Road and instructed County Manager Tommy Anderson to advertise for fencing work. The vote authorized next steps for the fencing project and related notices.
Mayor Clark Smith proclaims September as Make A Wish Awareness Month to boost wishes for children with life threatening illnesses. County engineer Jerry Cochran confirms fencing meets New Mexico Highway specs as commission eyes state highway officials in Deming for road trade signatures. The commission awarded Playas Fire Department a $142,622 Becker pump truck and Virden Fire Department a new mini pumper.
City center shows a broad activities complex with a late October grand opening planned. Arthur Maxwell, Activities Director, is onsite to form bowling leagues for men and women at 542-8844 or City Hall messages. Also planned are winter league basketball and volleyball, exercise classes, and more.
Larry Link and his wife Linda of Mesa Arizona bought Steins this week from Warren Garrison who has rebuilt the site. The Links plan a tourist business with tours a store artifacts a rattlesnake petting zoo and exhibits. Link operates a rattlesnake business raising about 350 snakes selling hides meat and creating belts and hatbands. They intend extensive repairs and expect to open around October first.
Lisa Meloy, 17, of Animas, Nevada? Hidalgo County, NM, competes for the State Fair Queen title with horsemanship scoring 60 percent and personality 40 percent. A 1985 Miss Hidalgo County Rodeo Princess and 1987 County Rodeo Queen, she rides a 13 year old quarter horse Rocky in barrel racing and related events. Meloy attends Animas High School, belongs to Cotton City 4-H Club and Animas FFA, and plans business studies at Western Texas College.
Lordsburg Municipal Schools Board of Education will hold a closed meeting Tuesday September 20 1988 at 7 00 p m Pursuant to Section 10 15 1 Subsection E Paragraph 2 NMSA 1978 The meeting will be in the Board Room at 501 West Fourth Street Lordsburg New Mexico
The Lordsburg Optimist Club holds its second silhouette shoot on Saturday September 17 inviting Hidalgo County youths aged 8 to 18 to learn shoot and compete. Trophies awarded for each age group with 9 total prizes and ammunition provided at no cost. Rifles available at the range for those without one. safety rules strictly enforced to ensure fairness.
McDonald Construction will break ground Monday between 10:00 and 10:30 for a new McDonalds restaurant. Bill Konopnicki, owner of the Lordsburg franchise, also runs McDonalds in Globe, Safford and Willcox. Taylor Resource Corp of Las Cruces is prime contractor. Facility expected to open by December 20.
Bearl Dunkerson, former Lordsburg resident, longtime Silver City resident, died Wednesday morning in Indianapolis. He had traveled there for open heart surgery conducted earlier that week.
