Two Killed One Injured In Headon Collision Near Lordsburg
Two people died and a third was injured in a head on crash on U S 70 80 about 1.6 miles east of Lordsburg on Saturday September 9. Victims were Olin Lee Gruzzell and Maude Brown. Brown was a Marine sergeant and the other driver was a Blooming Texas woman. Mrs Woody drove another car involved.

Former Local Man In Critical Condition From Gunshot Wound
George Smith 24 of Deming is hospitalized in El Paso after a chest wound suffered early Sunday near Deming. He is the son of Mr and Mrs John Walter Smith of Lordsburg and a Lordsburg High School graduate. Bobbie Evans 22, a Deming barber, is charged with assault with intent to kill. Authorities say jealousy over Smiths relationship with Evans ex wife sparked the shooting.

Old Timers Parade Kicks Off Hidalgo County Fair

New Mexico adopts season dates for mourning and white winged doves from Sept 1 to Oct 30 1961, Wilson snipe Nov 1 to Nov 30 1961, rails and gallinules Sept 14 to Nov 4 1961. Shooting hours run sunrise to sunset mountain time for most species, with dove hours half an hour before sunrise. Bag limits include 15 doves per day 30 in possession, eight snipe per day eight in possession, 25 rails per day 25 in possession and 15 other rails per day 15 in possession.
