Lordsburg School District voters approve a bond issue for high school building improvements. Unofficial results show 325 in favor to 144 against, a margin over 2 to 1. Work to begin with minimal disruption this year, contractor selection next, with phased construction during and after the 1986-87 program.
Lordsburg City Council selected Fieldhouse Engineers from Las Cruces over rival firms Alley Engineering and Associates and Engineering Inc to handle city project planning and design. The decision follows proposals from both candidates and indicates a preference for Fieldhouse’s approach.
Richard Lewis Bond, a transient, was arrested August 30 for trespassing. Investigators link Bond to a Wyoming homicide after a tailed motorbike and credit card usage across multiple states. Bond remains in Hidalgo jail as extradition proceeds and further fieldhouse study is planned.
Former Lordsburg High School 1949 graduate Estrada has completed an ESL teaching manual aligned with Houghton Mifflin books. He earned a BA from New Mexico Highlands University and an MA from UCLA while serving as a Deming teacher after earlier posts in Gallup. His wife Beatrice Estrada heads Deming special services.
Don Keller gas supervisor for Lordsburg attended a August 11 15 1986 Catholic Protection seminar in Albuquerque New Mexico. He covered corrosion prevention principles cathodic protection testing and electrical basics. Keller earned multiple certificates from federal and corporate programs including pipeline safety and water meter maintenance. Randy Estrada completed a 64 hour training at the New Mexico State Highway Department Academy in Roswell. Mayor Jo Tom Smith notes a future national need for certified corrosion specialists in gas utilities. Ed Ondack provides regional DOT updates.
Hidalgo County Commissioners met with no major actions taken. El Sol Farms, represented by J Wayne Woodbury, reiterated a subdivision proposal detailing water wells and an improved road system. A cafeteria compensation plan regarding county payroll was also discussed along with delays on the Al Patty road and jail procedure manual. Commissioner Sven Thygerson and editor John Schimmel toured the jail facilities.
Former Lordsburg star David Estrada was inducted into the Northern Arizona University Hall of Fame at halftime of the NAU versus San Angelo game. A 1961 Lordsburg High All-State back, he set a career NAU rushing record and later joined the Redskins in the 14th round. Inducted by coach May Spillbury, he is among 34 Lumberjack Hall of Fame members.
City Corner reports unofficial results of the School Bond Issue from local radio. Mayor Pro-TemArthur Clark Smith thanks citizens for supporting student needs and curbside pickup coordination, noting repair of sanitation trucks and extra help from Lordsburg Liberal with late bulletin submission.
