The Observation Post notes Alan Bertha Koff underwent heart surgery at Providence Memorial in El Paso. Details on operative condition were not available beyond her being as expected to do well. Koff has been at the bedside since the operation, and well wishes from the town are conveyed for a speedy recovery.
The seventy third convention of the Grand Lodge of New Mexico and the 37th of the Grand Temple of Pythian Sisters convene in Lordsburg from September 20 with Grand Chancellor Frank Bow presiding and Grand Chancellor Marie Taylor in charge of sessions. Events include a reception, drill by Girls, service, and oath taking at Masonic Hall, with Tuesday filled by business sessions.
A Lions club meeting reviewed a weekend road block run with State Police and Lordsburg Rangers. Volunteers listed include Victor Reay and others. about 500 vehicles were checked for licenses and log books. One driver jailed for DWI paid $100 fine. Border Patrol aided in the arrest. Most motorists cooperated and welcomed the safety effort.
The 1959 60 P T A opens at 7 30 p m Monday Sept 14 in the high school auditorium to welcome and introduce teachers outline aims and projects review a State Convention and explain committee purposes A P T A scholarship was awarded to Miss Rachel Chavez now at Western New Mexico University Silver City to study physical education and teaching.
The Old Timers event features a chuck wagon dinner at 6 45 p m on the American Legion grounds with Joe Rouse and Ed Jackson cooking. Chris Fox of El Paso, a top Southwest after dinner speaker, will address the gathering.
Agapito 8 Torres of the New Mexico Veterans Service Commission will be in Lordsburg at the Hidalgo Hotel Lounge from 9 30 a m to 3 00 p m on Monday September 14 1959. Veterans or dependents needing help with veterans affairs are urged to contact him. He notes veterans with less than 90 days service during wartime are now tax exempt under House Bill No 90 and should file for their certificate before January 1960.
Clarence Blair won by naming the mystery person but missed the jackpot in the Hidalgo County Who's Who contest. Mrs. Sam Gass was the mystery woman. Draw handled by Corky Gandara with 63 perfect slips and 83 near misses. Blair to collect seven fifty plus a year’s Liberal subscription. next box at Bishop Lumber Company.
The Mavericks trounced the Silver City Western Colts 32 6 in the first game of the season before a capacity crowd. Dave Estrada starred with three touchdowns, John Mann and Art Altunar each added one, while the Mavericks’ line limited Colt gains. The lone Colts score came on a 38 yard dash by Lawrence Montoya. The Mavericks head to Ruidoso next, with travel plans outlined for the trip.
Sid Wilson, ex mayor of Tombstone and former Buffalo Bill rider, will drive the restored Modoc Stage Coach in the Old Timers Parade. The coach, owned by Teddy Koutsoulis, recently returned from New York, with Wilson planning to participate despite a recent ankle injury.
Sharon Bowman was installed as Worthy Advisor for Rainbow Assembly No. 17 with Sally Baker as installing officer on Sunday September 6. Officers included Wanda Wilder Grand Marshall, Charlotte Badgett Chaplain, Ruby Warren Grand Recorder, and Lena Van Buren Pianist. Bowman dedicates term to grandmother Moselle Messecar and former Mother Advisor David Warren.
