Mrs E W Mitchell hosted a September 3 luncheon at the Other Club for her mother Mrs Marguerite Deale of Phoenix Arizona. Mid summer flowers adorned tables while Bridge and Pokeno were played. Bridge winners were Mrs Nat Gammon high and Mrs Freeman McWhorter low. Pokeno winners were Mrs Clarence Jack high and Mrs X D Capps low. Other guests listed include Mrs W P Churchill Mrs Jack Safford Mrs L J Balch and several others.
Heavy rains did not dampen Saturday evening at the Officers Club as Kpoly music filled most of the night and dancing drew a large crowd. An Army officer present enjoyed the lively social gathering.
Mrs Rufus Crews hosted a Red Cross sewing afternoon on Monday September 7. Volunteers logged 23 hours for seven blouses and five baby slips and enjoyed lunch at the Biltmore. Attendees included Mesdames Jack Safford L J Butch Clarence Jack R D Capps and O J Smart Ellen Capps.
The main event noted is Special Order No 74 which reportedly boosted morale and cheer among the troops. The brief mentions camels and quarters as colorful aside but centers on the order’s impact on the soldiers.

Brig. Gen. R. C. Charlton State Director of Selective Service says the switch to the category system for calling up registrants will be completed in about ten days in New Mexico. He notes most boards are already using the system and offers guidance from statewide tours to aid local boards. The order of calls will follow seven categories, prioritizing single men with no dependents and those with dependents in nonessential war work, with exemptions to avoid splitting families.
A new contract for fifty thousand dollars of improvements at the Army Camp has been awarded and work will begin soon. Priority rights go to government construction, and the delay cannot be long. The Camp Commander is praised as capable and the soldier and guard personnel are described as high class.
Ted Trown of Brown Brothers, highway contracting firm, told a Liberal representative Wednesday they are employing about one hundred men on the Lordsburg to Forks project. He said work is moving along with speed and that Brown Brothers’ highway construction work is known for rigid inspection.
Mr and Mrs James T Wells of Cananea Mexico and Mr and Mrs R H W Miller of El Paso visit Mrs Olivia Wells sister of Miller at her home. They plan to return to James Wells mother’s house for another week of vacation while noting his pay continues during time off.
Attorney ER Forrest Sanders plans a trip to El Paso the first of the week. Upon his return he will be joined by his wife Mrs Sanders and their young daughter Ann McFarland Sanders who was born at Southwestern General Hospital.
The Recreation Committee aims to stage an event on the 26th of the month with new specialty numbers. Sergeant Ackerman asks for any suggestions to aid the soldier, while associating with Privates Gatz and Frank Bacon, the jitterbug specialist, drives him to the edge.
Mrs J R Poindexter and Mrs Donald Johnson hosted a bridal shower Thursday for Mrs Sam Hall nee Miss Mary Egbert. Bingo determined winners with Mrs Dick Kilgore taking high and Mrs H G Rountree as fow. Additional guests included Miss Rose McSherry and Mesdames Allan Hood, A B Ownby, J R Poindexter Jr, Henry Ellison, Elbert Coursey, A B Poindexter and J A Lasalle.
The Beta Sigma Phi held a September 1 meeting at Motel Hidalgo. Members returned pledge pins and will become full members after an October examination. Mrs. Margo Fuller led the program.
Mrs Edgar H Brimberry of Roswell and her two brothers James and Robert Kent Riggle of Skidmore Texas spent the weekend with Mr and Mrs R B Ownby. Mrs Brimberry known as Vera B Riggle once taught at Lordsburg High School and James was a graduate. Robert Kent will spend the winter in Roswell with the Brimberrys and attend high school there.
The U S Grazing Service in Deming New Mexico announces collaboration with the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to loan development funds up to 5000 for mining projects in New Mexico. Loans cover mining development tasks and road work to reach strategic mineral deposits under wartime programs. Applications go through local Grazing Service offices or the RFC.
Mrs Willie Rodgers returned from San Francisco where she visited her son Buck Barton who serves with the Merchant Marines. He has a fine assignment and expects to soon begin a long ocean voyage.
Lowell Prom Jones and Mary Lee Joven, both prominent at the Douglas Airplane factory in Santa Monica, report from Lake Arrowhead about a delightful California resort vacation.
The Junior Womans Club hosted a Thursday evening event in the club building with a buffet supper. After bingo, Mr and Mrs Richard Long received a miscellaneous shower with many local couples and individuals in attendance.
A Lions Club session Tuesday noon presided by Allan Bowman welcomed Cub Herbert H. Bryant into full membership and unanimously elected County Agent Paul E. Hudson. Mayfield, the program chairman, arranged seven weeks of upcoming programs.
John Ball rode the morning train Tuesday toward Fort Benning Georgia for officer training school. A few onlookers who saw him said he looked grand.
Percy FE Krewson and family will be away from Lordsburg for three weeks to hold an evangelistic meeting in Montebello California. Richard Mills, Pacific Bible Seminary graduate, will supply the pulpit at the Church of Christ. He is the younger brother of Le Roy Mills who supplied here for three months in the summer of 1940.
Mr and Mrs Connie Malone, residents here three years, depart to the colors. During their stay Mr Malone worked with Standard Oil and earlier with Eagle Drug staff. A host of friends regret their departure.
Ernest Harris of the Silver City Army recruiting office visited Lordsburg to recruit women for the WAAC. He will return every Thursday at about nine o'clock, open to enlist eligible men as well. Harris noted New Mexico may have five colored WAAC women but none recruited yet.
Saturday Mr and Mrs L B Robinson take daughter Betsy to El Paso to begin her senior year at the College of Mines. Miss Jessie Lee Williams will accompany them.
Lt Col C A Lundy named commanding officer of Sub District Three in the Southern Defense Command. He has long service and will coordinate Civilian Defense chairs across Hidalgo Catron Sierra Socorro Dona Ana Luna and Grant counties with State Guard leaders to meet domestic emergencies during the war.
A group of Community Public Service men fished the Elephant Tutt Dam over Sunday and hauled a hundred pounds of bass and catfish from the lake. A catfish weighed about 40 pounds. Participants included managers Donald Johnson J T Poindexter district managers Geo Johnson chief engineer Marvin Fuller and von Tobby Maurice Conner and G W Sherwood all of Bilver City plus manager Troas Cook and central manager A P Grider.
Kerry, director of the Income Tax Division, completed a detailed chronological review of the Bureau since 1948 up to June 1, 1942. The report, on legal parchment, shows thousands of figures in balance and easily understood by any intelligent reader. The note questions promoting Earle to head the Bureau of Revenue.
J D Robertson and A S A in England sent a cablegram to Mrs Julie Robertson confirming he is OK in all particulars. Robert Robertson remains nursing a broken ankle, a fact that pleases the doting parent.
Fred Kerr Jr. at Nashville Tennessee classification center writes of army life and the U.S. vastness. He may be moved to another camp soon. S K Gass of Yeleta visited his son S H Gass and family along with many friends this week.
Election returns announced as fast as votes counted. Montague Cohen Heather and Brickley serve on the committee for the event at La Fiesta on Saturday September 12 with the six piece U S C Vasquez Orchestra from Silver.
Lordsburg Servicer Club lists weekly hostess dates from Friday September 11 to Thursday September 17. Hosts include Mrs H G Rountree, Mrs Charlie Walter, Mrs Arthur Richards, Mrs John Bradford, Mrs Creighton Bowman, Mrs Roy Melugin, Mrs Tom Mayfield, Mrs RK Pratt, Mrs R B Ravena, Mrs Fr Ht Singer, Mrs Ed Wright, Mrs Harold Rolfe, and Mrs BE J Short.
J Grimes president of Banner Mining Company and A H Hardy chief auditor arrived for several days with Superintendent Bowman to inspect the Banner plant and Clifton properties. Grimes recently flew to Washington to see their daughter Mrs Stewart Mark wife of Captain Mark of the Intelligence Department U S A and the granddaughter Mary Ann.
John A Johnson Jr leaves Wednesday to join the Brown Military Academy in San Diego. The school is described as a top notch military institution on the coast.
Franz Louis of Ghotenha us is remembered as a loyal playful dog. He aided his mistress in distress and brightened visitors with cheerful eyes. He enjoyed prairie bird chases and intersected lives of locals and stock men during his brief three years.
