Lordsburg Police Stop Suspected Murder Threat at Station

Off duty Lordsburg officer David Newell and partners halted a lavender covered Toyota pickup after a BOLO. Suspects Robert Yanez Jr. and David Velasques were arrested for murder and related charges in El Paso. A loaded 38 revolver and a 22 rifle were found. The duo waived extradition and were sent to El Paso authorities.

Gutierrez Services Held Wednesday

Doroteo Sanchez Gutierrez longtime Lordsburg resident died Sunday at his home. Visitation Tuesday 2 to 5 p.m. at Baca's Heather Funeral Chapel. Rosary 7:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's Church. Interment Shakespeare Cemetery. He was born March 28, 1916 in Hurley New Mexico. Survived by wife Ascencion, son Oscar, daughters Amelia and Herlinda, fourteen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. Pallbearers and honorary bearers named. The Animas School Board meets September 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Animas Elementary Library. Public invited.

County To Receive EMS Funds In Fiscal Year

Hidalgo County will receive 33 668 dollars under the EMS Fund Act for 1988 89. Barak Wolff says 33 counties and 76 municipalities receive allocations with each service guaranteed 3000 to 20000 dollars. This is the first EMS Fund Act distribution under the Dollar for Life amendments of 1987. The permanent fund tripled distributable amounts this year for 236 providers including ambulances first responders fire rescue and four air transport services. Hidalgo County funds are itemized.

Janelle Fiore Dies in Lordsburg Sunday

Janelle R. Fiore of Lordsburg died Sunday in Silver City. Born August 26, 1939 in Wellington Kansas, she worked as a waitress before moving to Lordsburg eight years ago. Survived by her father Earl Shehan of Lordsburg, mother Pearl Webster of Red Bluff California, two daughters Deborah Smith and Melanie Frederick, a brother Michael Shehan, a sister Cherie Leitem, and three grandchildren. Memorial services were held September 8 at 2:00 p.m. at Heather Funeral Chapel. Cremation by Mimbres Crematorium.

Stephen Gerald Manes, born October 11 1942 in Jager West Virginia, died September 5 in Springerville Arizona. He lived in Springerville six months and worked as an electrician for Brown & Root Construction. Survived by mother Grace T. Manes of Upper Black Eddy PA two daughters Dawn of Salinas CA Heather of Lordsburg two brothers William Lee of Bridgeton NJ Larry Thomas of Keeau HI. Funeral Friday September 9 at Baca's Heather Funeral Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Cremation by Mimbres Crematorium.

Hinojos Esquivel And Estrada Net Trophies

Hinojos Esquivel and Estrada fared well at the 1988 NRH National Rifle Silhouette Championships in Raton New Mexico with over 400 competitors from Canada Mexico South Africa and the United States. Hinojos and Esquivel teamed with Ken Scoggins to win the First Place team title in Smallbore Hunter B Class. Estrada narrowly missed the National Aggregate Title by one point, losing to Jim Carmichael Outdoor Life Magazine shooting editor, amid tight contest results and shoot offs.
