Mavericks Triumph as Grant Tontte Leads offense

Mavericks beat Cathedral 43 to 20 on Saturday night at Fort Grant Arizona. Grant Tontte led a strong ground game with 460 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns, while quarterback Mick Menapace connected for 30 passing yards and directed the offense. Renteria, Sanchez, Richardson, and Rodriguez scored as the Mavericks built a commanding lead. Cathedral struggled with penalties and pass defense as Fort Grant controlled the game in a non-conference showdown.

Aztec Airlines to Serve Three Southwestern Cities

Newly formed Aztec Airlines will begin daily passenger schedules linking El Paso Las Cruces and Silver City starting September 12. The Texas corporation will operate two daily loops from El Paso International Airport to Las Cruces and Silver City with morning and late afternoon flights. The carrier will also handle small parcel air freight and charter flights and may include Douglas Arizona in its route. Officers include David R. Winston president C H Leavell vice president and Hank Griere secretary treasurer with Giere as chief pilot.

Phelps Dodge Plans Open Pit Copper Mine at Tyrone NM

Robert G Page, president of Phelps Dodge Corp, announced plans to develop Tyrone New Mexico as an open pit copper mine with initial output around 55,000 tons annually. The project requires 50 million tons of overburden removal, equipment, buildings, rail haulage, a concentrator, and ancillary facilities at a total cost over 100 million dollars, taking three to four years to complete and employing about 1,100 after completion. Concentrates would be sent to Douglas Arizona for smelting and refining at El Paso Texas.

Cotton Extravaganza Winners Announced in Lordsburg

Winners of the Cotton Extravaganza held in Lordsburg on Saturday August 27 include three women from Animas and three from Deming. First place in the afternoon evening category went to Mrs. William Massey of Animas, with Mrs. Jack Gauthier of Animas second and Mrs. James Taney of Deming third. In the town and country division, Deming entrants swept with Mrs. Ava Jo Hensley first, Mrs. Tommy Perez second, and Mrs. O'Dell Massey third. All advance to the State Event on Cotton Day September 16 in Albuquerque, where prizes include 100 for first, 50 for second, and 30 for other attendees.

Heart Association Plans Lecture on Heart and Lung Resuscitation

The Hidalgo County Heart Association committee met on August 30 to outline a lecture and demonstration on heart and lung resuscitation to be held Thursday September 29 at the Cafetorium here. An annual conference of Heart Associations of the Southwest is set for October 15 in Las Cruces.
