Enrollment opens at Lordsburg with 676 students and several new faculty members. Fern Silver leads Home Economics and ninth grade English, Robert Harpham moves to Central in the fifth grade, and Pearl Cross joins Summit.
Supt. R A Palin pursued prospecting in Arizona and helped beautify school grounds. Principal J C Miller studied for a teaching master's at the University of New Mexico and visited Chicago for the Century of Progress. M E Davis attended the University of Colorado and rodeo in Cheyenne. W C Mearns traveled in Texas and Iowa and worked as a nursemaid. H G Ehrhardt toured Kansas and Oklahoma and oversaw school construction. Mrs Fern Silver taught Home Economics at a university during summer.
Mr and Mrs Bob Dunagan welcome a second son born August 29 in Bisbee weighing 8 pounds. The family plans permanent residence in Lordsburg arriving mid month. Eddie Allen left Tuesday for Austin Texas and will be away for some time.
C. S. Krane announces the opening of a new jewelry store in the Small building opposite the bank on Saturday September ninth. The shop will carry diamonds watches jewelry silverware and other goods. Rev and Mrs J R Fitzgerald of Tucson visited the Palm home Monday and Tuesday.
The Lordsburg Lions Club met at the Methodist Church with Lion R. A. Palm as new president. They adopted the NRA program for Lordsburg and outlined a house to house canvass led by a Lions Club NRA committee, enlisting Boy Scouts and targeting signatures on membership cards. The meeting urged speakers for moving picture programs and community events to support National Recovery.
T. W. Plunkett organized Hidalgo County for the National Re-employment Service with Dr. C. P. Austin as Chairman and R. H. Wamel as Vice Chairman. The committee includes Mrs. Felix Jones, C. Payne, Richard Tatsch, C. L. McGhee, and others to back a major project and replace ex-service, labor, and employer representatives. The first project targets constructing 32 miles of Federal highway on U. S. 80 west of Lordsburg near the Arizona line.
A list shows several students transferring to universities and colleges including University of New Mexico, State Teachers College, and Kamay City Dental College. Others like Pauline Austin and Basil Faber are noted as entering new programs while Malcolm Barton visits home and is stationed with CCOC near High Rolly.
Ivan Johnson and Phillip Coyfe state patrolmen were here Wednesday night and warned a crowd against violating state laws. They said this time the violators will face the judge with a $5 or $10 fine and costs on the next offense.
Mr and Mrs D J Maples with daughters Faye Laverne Eunice Odelle and Misses Mary and Lucy Cobb traveled from Deming to attend church and spend the day with Rev S M Mine family. It was discovered a triple birthday celebration was staged with Miss Mary Cobb Mr Maples and Mackie Mims attaining milestones.
The Girl Scout advisor will be here Friday September and Mrs Long has postponed her musical which was to have been on that date. An announcement for the musical time will be made later.
The reorganized RFC committee lists Superintendent R A Palm as chair, Harry Martin as secretary, and members including Mrs W P Hill A Cueto P Wright C H Browder D S Pon Mrs A L Green G L Ross and George P Jeffws.
The Lordsburg goat and sheep show on Saturday drew major mohair buyers and featured 7 goats and 22 sheep with judges Bob Davis of Uvalde Texas and professors Lawton and Neale of State College. Armer-Reid goats from Kingston and Steins plus local ranches highlighted pedigrees while plans for a bigger show next year unfold.
Mr and Mrs Walter Searles and C W Collins returned from the State Game Association meeting in Carlsbad where delegates attended one of the most interesting sessions in association history. Delegates arrived early to hunt prairie chickens as the season opened five days before the convention. State Game Warden Eliott Barker and four Biological Survey members spoke with slides tracing game business 100 years ago. The banquet was held at La Caverna hotel. A Carlsbad caverns tour featured the group guided by Captain Tom Roles. R A Lacey of Chaves County was elected president Gordon White vice president and the president was to select his own secretary.
Mrs Katy Hall county superintendent schedules a September 8 meeting with rural teachers in her office to discuss free text books reading methods and primary English. A subsequent reception at the Hidalgo Grill honors participants.
The Fane Birds will supply music for a jitney dance at Palador Pavilion on Saturday night. September 9 details invite dancers and social attendees to join the event.
News arrives of the death of Mrs Millie Stolle sister of Mrs Florence Crocker. She died Friday September 1 from heart disease, according to reports reaching here.
The Legion and Auxiliary held a two night picture show that attracted attendees and raised 26.4 for Legion funds. Prizes included a month's pass won by Mrs Malone and Miss Evelyn Pagne, seven gallons of gas won by Mr Schwarz and Mr Nacarrate, a dollar bill won by Harry Johnson and Richard Tatech, with donations from local supporters.
A tax meeting is set for this afternoon at 4 o clock at the courthouse to advocate the 20 mill amendment. Speakers include W A Sutherland of Las Cruces and Kenneth Balcomb of Bernalillo county. Tom Gee shipped a car of horses to Albany Texas on Wednesday.
