The Board of Education in regular session voted to impose a freeze on expenditures for improvements, student and other maintenance. The action followed discovery that the district’s Average Daily Membership was lower than expected, affecting budget figures. President Henry Alvarez presided.
Lordsburg High School acts to drop homecoming bonfire and freshman initiation. A one vehicle crash near Lordsburg claimed two lives including a four year old. The board also reviews records, property ownership, and staffing moves while planning a Hidalgo County Fair dismissal.
Hidalgo County Fair announces a Cotton Special Division to showcase garments made of cotton and awarded prizes for best three in division. Entries must be framed and wired for hanging, completed within the last two years, with rules and entry forms available at the Chamber of Commerce or courthouse. An All Breed Open Horse Show is also planned for September 6 with Halter, Western Pleasure, Reining, and Pole Bending judging.
Silver City officials including Recreation Committee chair man Doc Campbell reported to the Southwest New Mexico Resource and Development Council that the U S Department of Agriculture staff advised no direct Forest Service affiliation with the RC D D Thus no department action is available The panel will continue pursuing more local recreation projects during the meeting in Silver City Randy Gose opened the session with a welcome speech and Dick Dockum of Lordsburg responded Jim Ray from the State Planning Office issued certificates
Lordsburg city fathers approved a contract with Stillwell and Company of Albuquerque to perform preliminary ground work for a 2.5 million gallon water storage tank replacement. They also authorized a general obligation bond of 400000 dollars to fund the project, repayable over 12 to 17 years, with Stillwell present as bonding representative.
Incumbent state representative William J. Upton campaigned in Lordsburg to defend his seat against newcomer Von Rue Crawford. The Deming rivals both sharpened Hidalgo County races, with Crawford planning active outreach in Lordsburg during the Hidalgo County fair.
Maverick season tickets available at gates before the Lordsburg Cobre game. Adult tickets cost 5.00 and student tickets 3.00. Maverick Booster Club to meet September 10 in room one at 8:00 p.m. All old members urged to attend and supporters welcome.
