Lordsburg-Hidalgo Library launches after school Storytime on Thursdays starting September 8 at 3 30 p m with stories for preschool and elementary students. Reading activities and a monthly craft day will accompany weekly 15 30 minute sessions plus holiday specials and ongoing library rules.
Friends of Gay Johnson known as Mrs J host a Potluck Supper Retirement Party in her honor on Thursday September 8 at 6 30 p m in the Animal Community Center. The event honors 26 years of service to the youth of the Animal School District with dessert drinks provided and attendees asked to bring hot and cold dishes and their own table service.
Montez Home Center was awarded first place for their float in the Hidalgo County Fair Parade held Saturday. The Chamber of Commerce float placed second and third went to Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Winners in the decorated bicycle contest were Hector Ibarra first, Marisa Barrio second, and Clinton Sanders third. Parade grand marshal was Ladd Pendleton.
The Highway and Transportation Department Traffic Safety Bureau urges motorists to travel with caution over the Labor Day long weekend. Fenner calls for defensive driving, vigilance for DWI drivers, use of restraints, and adherence to speed limits and traffic laws. In 1987 Labor Day Weekend there were twelve crash fatalities and 245 injuries.
The New Mexico Supreme Court orders District Judge Manuel Saucedo of Lordsburg to rule soon on two issues in a water rights dispute between New Mexico and El Paso. One asks for Suaecdo’s disqualification. the other contests the timeliness of El Paso’s appeal of a state engineer ruling against their well drilling. El Paso argues bias and lack of fair judgment due to Saucedo's represented area. NM State Engineer Steve Reynolds had rejected El Paso’s water-use application.
Western Bank held an open house over Thursday and Friday to celebrate its expansion and remodel. Visitors toured the modern facility with bank directors and staff, enjoyed refreshments, and entered door prize drawings. Prize winners included a $50 bond awarded to Blanche Hitson, Joe Chaires, Frances Reynolds, Enid Stephenson, Lana Harn, and Ellen Maxwell, plus coin prizes for Rodney Newton, Edith White, William J. Smith, and Jo Eddy.
Linda Foust lifelong Lordsburg resident died Sunday August 28 in Tucson. Visitation Thursday 2 to 5 pm at Bacas Heather Funeral Chapel with a rosary at St Josephs Catholic Church, Mass Friday 10 am officiated by Fr Narciso Rivera, burial at Shakespeare Cemetery. Survived by husband Dave A Foust two sons parents and siblings. Pallbearers named. honoraries listed. Interment at Shakespeare Cemetery.
Lordsburg police officer Rusty Umphres attended a narcotics agent training seminar in Albuquerque the week of August 22. Sponsored by Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department Narcotics Division and the Rocky Mountain Information Network, the program covered drug trafficking narcotics and classes led by a crime analyst from the Network.
City Corner notes the Hidalgo County Fair was memorable and highly enjoyable with rising attendance, improved exhibits, and expanded booths. The writer commends the Fair Board, Extension Service, volunteers, and government for year round efforts and looks forward to next year.
